TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following waswritten as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group ofdevelopers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would bea tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local marketall to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 peopleattended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicianslive in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'JazzNightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicatesthat the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazzentertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

In the argument, the author asserts thatthe proposed jazz music club will make a great profit in Monroe. The authorthought, since the nearest jazz club is so far away that if we build a club inMonroe, we will maintain sufficient customer undoubtedly. He regards that themajority of people living in Monroe are jazz fans and the result of anationwide study also was employed to support his argument. However, if wethink this seriously, we will find it's unjustified. We cannot assure theprofitable future of such a proposed club just based on these reasons.

First of all, since people in this areaused to enjoy themselves in club 65 miles away, so we cannot make sure thatthey will change such a habit and convert to the new club. Maybe most of themhave a high brand loyalty to a particular club with a special musician, and thuscannot accept the feature of other club except the one they had chosen for years.Besides, the newly build club is doomed to experience a longtime ofexperimental development to fix its own feature and style, so it cannot caterto all jazz fans in this area during this time, and thus cannot cultivate itsown customers. No customers, then no profits.

Second, the author's judging on thepotential custom quantity of Monroe is doubtful. The statistics of people attendinglast year’s jazz festival cannot be used to demonstrate there is a large amountof customers, because maybe many people participated in this activity justwanted to taste the delicious food selling during that time. As to thosementioned jazz musicians, they dwelled in Monroe maybe because they wanted tolive a hermit life without the trouble of jazz fans. Such as the situation ofthe Jazz Nightly----maybe it was the highest-rated radio program in Monroe dueto the advertisement broadcast in its intervals. So, we cannot conclude thereis a big market in Monroe just based on these facts.

Third, the nationwide study cannot be usedto explain situation of Monroe. Although typical jazz fan spends close to$1,000 per year on jazz entertainment, things can be different in Monroe. Forexample, if the majority people in Monroe are jobless, they will not affordsuch an expense. Even though we admit this can be true, we should notice thatthis money will be spent on various places, not only in this proposed club. What’s more, when we calculate the profit of a club, we need to take the costinto account, since we do not know the salary level and the price of materialsin Monroe, it’s not reasonable for us to accept such a conclusion in theargument.

Just as we had analyzed above, the author‘sconclusion is too indiscreet. Maybe we need do more survey to judge if theproposed club can be profitable in Monroe or not.
