ISSUE143 - "Artists should pay little attention to their critics.* Criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist's creativity."
*those who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Hold with the temporary public opinions, fine arts critics make a myriad of critics to the works of artists, and through mass media these criticism reached to public. Should artist pay little attention to their critics in order to maintain their own style, or listen to the criticism?
Arts, here I define as fine arts, like paintings, music, sculptures and photographs, reveals artists person feelings and reflects their opinions on society. A lasting art work should be both excellent in the external aesthetic appearance as well as its internal unique idea. Like Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, people captured by the beautiful smile presented by the painting and lured to think about the virtue of kindness which Da Vinci tried to express.
Criticism on arts usually combined with two parts, one is the critics of the basic skill of the arts, such as the color using in a painting, the notes variety in music; another part is the critics person understanding of the ideal which the arts tries to convey. The first part of the critics about a certain art work usually gets a consensus with different critics, while the second part diverse from critic to critic. The purpose of criticism is not to undermine and constrain the artist's creativity, but to tell the public the external aesthetic beauty of a works, and the internal thought behind the image.
As the knowledge and experience are limited in one individual critic, he/she opinion on a certain work may not be accurate or profound enough, however, after a comparison and analysis of numerous different critics, the public can form a relative true image of what a certain work is like. The voices form critics contribute a lot in bringing public awareness of arts.
Some artists chose to ignore those critics while some listen to them carefully. Ignoring what the critics said or the reflections among the pubic by his/her work, the artists is bond to be drown in this spiritual world and trying to create more similar works; while by listening to the voice of different critics, artists can acknowledge the shortcomings in their work and what the public expected form art thus he/she can make a change. If an artist created series of the similar works, just the copy of one other, then the artist leaves rare accomplishments to be valued; if an artist can get a clear idea of what the society is need, and by meeting these needs, he/she reflects the world.
However, artists should not over be sensitive to criticism. If an artist be guided by the critics or the public, he/she would never present the world a different perspective. An artist must maintain his/her uniqueness, showing an idea which is different form most others in order to inspire the public to feel the society in a different way.
To sum up, Criticism to arts brought arts awareness to public and give guidance to artists. In order to create more valuable works, the artists should maintain their unique styles and at the same time accept some guidances of critics. |
