I think that competition is, despite of its side effects,generally beneficial to society.It is arbitrary and unfair to decide against it without fully considering its benefits.


As one of the basic natural laws , competition functions to preserve the balance of nature and serves ultimately as the driving force of evolution.Species compete against each other for food,water,habitat and various resources to maintain their survival.Likewise,in society,competition among individuals over college admission,ideal jobs,potential clients and favorable opportunities is no less fierce.Just as natural species need better hunting skills and escape system to become the best-suited group,individuals also have to equip themselves with rich knowledge and strong abilities to prevail over their competitors.Thus,in an effort to win the competition,individuals seek every way to make progress and improvements,resulting in overall advancement of societies.

In the field of business,competition also exerts a positive influence on the society.For a market-oriented economy,enterprises compete against each other to win more clients,in which process,they adopt new technologies and techniques to increase the productivity and provide cheaper products.What’s more,competition also lies in after-sale services.It is through these activities that consumers’ common interests are best guaranteed.Also,their efforts to gain a larger share of the market serve as an impetus for research and will ultimately promote the overall development of the society.Apple uses an ipad,and a large portion of market belonged to laptops is conquered.As a result,in the Mobile World Congress this year,various companies released their newest tablets in competition against Apple. Now this industry is booming and customers are given wider choices.Take the motor industry for another example,with the roaring price of oil and the deteriorating environmental conditions,motor companies are now seeking to produce vehicles using electricity as the main power so that they will not lag behind in future competition,where energy-saving products will undoutedly lead the trend. From these examples,it’s not hard to conclude that competition keeps invigorating the development of the society.

The motto for Olympic Games,often traslated as”Swifter,Higher,Stronger ”,best explains the importance of competition.Athletes compete against each other and even with themselves to break records.By competition,they set convincing examples to the public of the power of persistance and endurance.They inspire individuals to face challeges courageously.Athletic competition is,in this way,also beneficial to the society.Liu Xiang,a 110-metre-hurdles player,successfully won the competition in Beijing Olympics.His heroic deeds are highly praised and his bravery in face of fierce competition greatly inspires Chinese youngsters in their pursuit of self-development.


Adimittedly,illegal and unhealthy competition like the abuse of drugs and bribery of officials surely will bring destructive effects to society.However,as long as rules and regulations are implemented,there are chances that those side effects can be reduced to a minimum.And if competition funcitons well,it brings benefit to society in all aspects.
