153.Students should bring a certain skeptism to whatever they study. They should question what thay are tought instead of accepting passively.
There is a growing consciousness that mere passive acception of knowledge is neither a efficent way of education nor a effective way to meet the needs of the society. Based on the previous experiences in human history, skeptism(or “critism” as synomy in some context), considered to be one of the best methods of positive learning, brings a lot of benefits both to individual development and to the society as a whole.
With respect to individuals, students will have a better mastery of knowledge. In one sense, people can deepen their understanding of what they learned. Skeptism, to some extent, shares the common spirit with Socratic method- that is, pursuing the essence of matters via questioning. By passive acception of knowledge, students will just stay on the superficial level of knowing something, let alone creating their own understanding. In another sense, compared with the passive acception of knowledge, positive skeptism helps students achieve long term retention. Some experts in mnemotics argues that questioning rasise the retetion scores of knowledge people leared through it’s postive influence on the mnemotic curve.
What’ more, skeptism helps to nurture capability of independent thinking ,which is a powerful weapon for dealing with tricky problems. Students are supposed to grow into mature practitioners in various fields, at which time they can hardly depend on textbooks; neither could they merely subject to other people’s words to make achievements, because the real world is teemed with new problems and abrupt crisis. In these cases, doctrinal experience couldn'’t work. Accordingly, becoming successful practitioner entails critism and self-judgement. In a word, students should establish the habit of skeptical thinking before they get down to some serious business and achieve pesonal sustainable development.
Skeptism is not only beneficial to individuals; more so, it drives the society to move forward as a whole. Renaissance best illuminates this point. The Eurupean avant-gardes,by raising the idea of humanism, held a critical attitude and expressed their skeptism toward theocracy. That’s how the whole society proceeded in terms of technology, literature, arts and culture. Considering this point, as education lays the fundumantal basis for social development, it is necessary to underline the importance of skeptism in learning process.
Simply put, without skeptism, human beings will suffer from the stagnacy of development or even worse, from backwardness. We have already seen tragedies brought about by banal conceptions dominated people from generation to generaion who were indoctrinated with clishe. In some backward period or areas, like premitive tribes, superstition like human sacrifice to the gods were conducted for a quite long time. Even in this day and age, some nations are still under autocracy without basic human rights. That’s how the lack of skeptism and blind following lags human civilization behind.
Admittedly, if skeptism is brought to an extreme end, it will be side effects First, it may lead to hubris. Students are supposed to hold skeptical attitude toward what they learn at the same time as they recognise the importance of showing respect to others. Actually, it is the precondition for critical thinking. What’s more, there are some undoutful principles, like ethics and morality. It is quite dangerous for students, especially young students, to question principle like this. To sum up, skeptism is not intended to nurture supercilious individuals, turning a deaf ear to other’s valuable advice and overlooking the previous experience, but for a better mastery of knowledge. In other words, don’t be skeptical for mere skeptical sake.
In the final analysis, skeptism as a positive way of learning plays a critical role in education. It is high time for both teachers and students to recognise its importance for sake of both individual achievments and social development. |
