一直迷迷茫茫弄新G，作文也不知道该怎么写才好。一直找不着伴，只能自己瞎改，今天发到坛子上来，希望大家能狠拍！！

ISSUE2：To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
人们必须通过研究一个社会的主要城市来了解它最重要的特点。

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might nothold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

我的提纲：

带保留的反对

1. 对于西方城市，这个观点正确。况且因为地理原因，城市的确反应了这个社会的特点。

2.1 但是，对于东方城市，首先因为全球化的影响，这些大城市已经不能反应这个社会的特点了。

2.2 而且，因为大城市的目标是改善人们的生活水平，并且大城市代表了一个国家的最好形象，因此统治者们会不遗余力地将最好的设施用于他们的大城市里，而这些东西，不能代表这个社会的真实水平和特点。

As is intensely described in the thought-provoking statement, the speaker focuses on the recommendation that one should study a society's major cities to understand the most important characteristics of the nation and it offers us the panorama of this culture. Admittedly, under the condition that some cities,which is chiefly located in the western world, such methods can be of great help. However, with the proviso that one researches the oriental countries, the scenario will not likely take place. To account for the above-mentioned phenomena, several aspects must be pushed forward to help us gain a deep insight into what has happened.

It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that for the western cities, the cultural preservation, economic character, and political specialty in rural areas pale in importance and representativity compared to its cities' achievement and ability of carrying forward the valuable and typical characteristics. That the latter contribution to the display of a nation’s peculiarity is more essential and fundamental is indisputable; after all, what enthusiastic tourist would prefer a nameless village in France than the major city Paris,which highlights its own specialty through thousands of resorts and attractions, such as Notre-dame de Paris, les Champs Elysees, Triumphal Arch and so forth? Moreover, the speaker's argument has considerable merit in another respect. Because of the poor geographic condition giving birth to the unqualified agriculture and stock-raising, it appears more proper for occidentals to live in the cities where their livelihood can depend on the business and commerce, thus ultimately assisting the pass from one generation to another of cultural tradition, economic convention and the representative development,which characterize a society.

On the other hand is a fairly compelling argument that when it comes to the research of eastern countries it turns out to be a useless and non-effective means to study the major cities. Considering that the overwhelming wave of globalization and internationalization are influencing the whole world,especially the developing world--including most of the eastern countries, the oriental major cities are not the appropriate, genuine and vivid representation of the nation's characteristics any more. For example, in Shanghai, the most internationalized city with a dynamic boon in economic, it becomes a fashionable trend for most of its citizens to celebrate the Christmas, April Fool's Day, and Valentine's Day rather than the Chinese traditional festivals such as Dragon Boat Festival or Festival of Lanterns. On the contrary, if one sociologist wants to enjoy the traditional festival, going to a village is the best way, because the globalization has not yet effected the preservation and convention of characteristics in rural areas. In fact, query whether the metropolis can symbolize its society any longer, or whether the metropolis can be regarded as one individual society's “own” major city at all.

A second argument against the speaker's position has to do with the function and ultimate objectives of city. City serves to lift the quality of citizens’ life and put us in more touch with the convenient appliances, hi-tech equipment, and desirable facilities--in short, with the advancement, and the major cities, at least in many people’s mind, epitomize all the best facets of one nation. Thus the governors would surely assign higher priority to their first-rank cities to equip with all the technology they can apply. Therefore it is ironically obvious that an academician, with the purpose of appreciating the oriental characteristics, comes to these so-called developed cities and only to find that there is little difference among them--the same marvelous skyscrapers, the same prominent public traffic system, even the same enviable lifestyles! What the academician can see only reflects what the government wants to visualize him, but not the emblematic characteristics, which abide elsewhere.

In sum, the speaker's assertion that studying the major cities is necessary for understanding the characteristics of its society begs the question, because we cannot know whether the society's specialty is preserved in the metropolis or not. As for the western world, I agree that it might be helpful to research the big cities. Nevertheless, considering that the globalization also brings about the inextricable association and similarity among all the fist-rank cities, the speaker unnecessarily extends his broad assertion to an irreversible and it proves to be a difficult and useless means to study the so-called representatives of a society--major cities.
