新G Argument题库4号题
The following appeared in a letter from a homeowner to a friend.
“Of the two leading real estate firms in our town——Adams Realty and Fitch Realty——Adams Realty is a clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents; in contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part- time. Moreover, Adams’ revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch’s $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago I listed my home with Fitch, and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams Reality.”
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumption of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
(下面才是正文)
In this letter, the author suggests that people should choose Adams Reality rather than Fitch to sell their homes with the purpose of selling their homes quickly and gaining a good price. It may seem plausible, but in the process of making such a recommendation, the author uses many assumptions which are unstated in the letter.

First of all, the author assumes that more estate agents would result in higher work efficiency and bring more profit to home seller. However, such hypothesis is likely to be wrong. Perhaps although Adams has more estate agents, its whole scale is smaller than Fitch. Then its work efficiency is lower. In addition, the more estate agents it has, the more administers it employs, which may lead to a descent in the work efficiency. As it employs more managers, the firm need more fund to pay the salary, which may originate from the home sellers, its consumers. Undoubtedly, if the assumption is unwarranted, the author’s argument will be weakened.

Secondly, the author makes the hypothesis that home sellers can benefit more from the firm of more revenue and higher average home sale price. Actually, it is possible that in the spite of more revenue and higher average home sale price in Adam, home sellers who choose Adam receive less money from Adam because home sellers have to pay more money to Adam than Fitch, which may owe to the more money Adam needs to support itself. Obviously, if the assumption proves invalid, the author’s argument will be weakened.

Thirdly, the author hypothesizes that situations ten years ago and last year continue to current time. From my perspective, it may not hold true. Perhaps current time Fitch sells homes faster than Adam. Even if this assumption is confirmed, the home which was sold ten years ago may have more defects than the home sold last year. It is its defect, instead of lower work efficiency of Fitch, that extended its selling process. As a result, if the hypothesis is unwarranted, the author’s argument will be weakened.

In sum, there are many assumptions the author used are unstated, and if these assumptions are unwarranted, the author’s argument will be weakened. The author cannot make such a precarious recommendation unless all the assumptions the author used in the letter are valid.

真巧,我的第一篇argument也是这个,下面是我写的:
The above argument relies on three underlying assumptions: (1) the more outlets a firm has, the better the firm is; (2) Adams and Fitch are doing business in the same subdivision of the market, that is they are selling houses of averagely same quality to the potential customers of identical preference and purchasing power; (3) real estate market in the town didn't change, little if any, during he past ten years and the two houses the writer sold are of almost same quality.
Firstly, to support the idea that the Adams is superior, the writer argues that it has more agents, which reveals the author's perspective that more outlets are better. By easy observation, however, we find this kind of view is quite feeble –- no one can come to the conclusion that City Bank is less successful than any local bank from merely the observation that the latter possesses more agents.
Secondly, average selling price can support the argument if only the writer can assure that the two firms are doing business in an identical market subdivision. Can anyone assert that Lincoln auto is more successful than Toyota from the fact that Lincoln' average price is much higher than that of Toyota? This point entails the assumption (2) for justification of the author's argument.
Thirdly, prices and the timing of two houses sold out can support the idea in the argument only if people can be convinced of the factors mentioned in assumption (3). At least currency inflation and bank interest rate in ten years should be taken into consideration.
In conclusion, to make his/her point grounded, author should justify with solid evidence at least one of the assumptions listed in the beginning of the paragraph.
