TPO 15 lecture 1听写
like forgetfulness
plus, you really can not say you are getting an adjustive scientific results from a subject questionaire where people report on themselves
so it's no surprise that someone attempt to  design an abjective way to measure his distraction
it's a simple computer game designed by psychologist named nile levi
in levi's game
people watch as the letter N and X appear and disappear in the certain area on the computer screen
everytime they see an N
they press one key
and every time they see an X, they press another
except other letters also  start appearing in the surrounding area of the screen with an increasing frequency
which creates a distraction and makes the test more difficult
levis observed peoples' reaction time slowed as the distraction increased
oh, that is not too surprising, is it?
no, it's not.
it's the next part of the experiment that was surprising
when the difficulty really increase, when the screen filled up letters
people got better as spotting the  Xs and Ns
why did that happened
well, maybe one were really concentrating
we just don't perceive irrelevant information
maybe we just don't take in, you know?
yes, and that's one of hypothesis that was proposed
that the brain simply does not admit unimportant information
the second hypothesis,
is that, yes, we do perceive everything
but the brain categorizes the infomation
and whatever is the not relevant to what we are concentrating on gets treated low priority
so levis did another experiments designed to look the ability to concentrate better in the face of increased difficulty
this time she used brain scanning equipment to monitor activity in a certain part of the brain
the area called V5
which is the part of visual cortex
the part of brain that process visual stimuli
V5 is the area of the visual cortex that is responsible for the sensation of movement
once again, levi give people a computer-based test to do.
they have to distinguish between words upper and lower case the letters
or even harder
they have to count the number of salable in different words
this time, the distraction was a moving star field in the background
you know, where looks like a moving space passing stars
normally, area of V5 will be stimulated as those moving stars perceived and sure enough
levi found that
during the test, area of V5 is active
so people were aware the moving star field
that means people were not blocking out the distraction
so does that mean the first hypothesis is wrong?
the one says we don't even perceive irrelevant information when we are concentrating
yes, that's right
up to a point,
but that's not all
levi also discovered that as she made the test difficult
V5 became less active
so that means that not all people really notice the star field at all
that was quiet surprise and proved that the second hypothesis
that we do perceive everything all the time but the brain categorizes these distractions differently
well, that wasn't true neither
levi thinks the solution lies brains' ability to accept or ignore information
she thinks that its capacity is limited
it's like a high way,
when they are too many cars, traffic stops
no one can get on,
when the brain is loaded too capacity
no new distractions can be perceived
now, that may be the correct conclusion for visual distraction.
but more research is needed to tell us how the brain deals with say
the distraction of solving math problem when we are hungry
or when someone is singing in the next room

tpo 15 lecture2 听写
listen to the part of the lecture in the geology class
geologists we examine layers of the settlement on the surface to approximately the dates of past year time logic periods
uh, settlement as you know is the material like sand, gravel, and fossil fragments.
that is transported by natural forces like wind, water flow, or the move of glacials
so a settlement is transported and deposited and forms layer on the surface of the time
we examine these layers to learn about different logic time periods.
including when they began and ended
for example
from about 1.8 million years ago to around 7000 years ago
was the pleistocene epic
the pleistocene
was an ice age
during this epic, settlement was made by a kind of erosion and weathering happens when the climate was colder
and part of those settlement are fossils of plants and animals that lived at that time
the holocene epic follows the pleistocene epic
when the earth climate warmed up
around 7000 years ago
the holocene epic
is carried to us by different settlement
once form when climate is warmer
because the climate changed
the types of plants and animals changed also
holocene settlement contain remnants of more resent
plants and animals
so it's pretty easy to differentiate geologically
between these two epics
now there's growing evidence that the presents of the human that altered there so much
that a new epic of geologic history has begun
the antherpcene epic
a new human influenced epic
this diea
that we added a new anthopecene epic
was first proposed in 2002
the idea that
around the year 800 CE
the human population became large enough around a billian people
that its activities started in altering environment
this with also the time the industrial evolution
which brought tremendous increase in using fossil few such as coal
the exploitation of the fossil few
has brought planed wide developments
industrialization construction
uh mass transport
and this developments course major changes like additional erosion of the earth surface
and devour a station
also things like the damine river has caused increase settlements production
not mentioned the additional carbon dioxide and methine in the atmosphere
naturally
all this change showed up a recent settlement
and these settlements are quite different from pre year hundreds settlement layers
interestingly, there are some speculation of human started having a major impact on earth
much earlier about
8000 years ago
that's when agriculture was becoming wide spread
early farmers started creating forests and light store produced methane
but, I want to stress is this just a hypothesis
the idea of early humans could have such a major fact
well, I'm just not sure, we can compare it with industrialists
geologists far a future would be able assign a settlement being lade down today
where is right now
we can say the yes
human impact on the earth is clear
it would be future researchers who have a better perspective
and will be able to really draw line between the holocene
and the anthopecene epics

Parents should allow their children to make mistakes and let them learn from their own mistakes.

Whether should parents allow their children to make mistakes and let them learn from their own mistakes? Obviously, some people support this point of view, which may ignore many practical problems. While, I can not totally agree with it for the following reasons that if parents allow their children to make mistakes, their children will always fail to do things, and maybe not try their best. However, it’s is true that children would take a lesson when they fail, and pay attention to it, so that they could do better next time. But this is not necessary to exclude the justification of building up confidence since they always succeed. What’s more when children often fail, they would lose heart.

Certainly, we should admit that trials and errors can be the greatest lessons. Children would learn from the mistakes, and then to be more mature and more independent, which means they would learn how to deal with their own things rather than making decisions with the support and guidance of their parents. If we encourage child’s independence, we’ll see a confident self-image shine through. What’s more, these experiences will leave a lasting impression on children and they will learn to consistently make a decision and avoid making the same mistakes. Plus, parents should not over-react to children’s mistakes, contrarily, they could try to be tolerant and face the problems with children. In addition, this is the best way to develop children’s creativity. If parents do all the things for children, or protect their children from everything from bumps and bruises, how could children realize their own thoughts?

However, on the contrary, large amount of people fail to consider that why not to avoid making mistakes by a considerable preparation and organization. This doesn’t mean that parents help to sweep away the obstacle, but a strict requirement that is beneficial to children. Before making decisions, a good preparation could reduce the probability of making mistakes, it also a good habit. When we consider the chance, we should be aware that, there would be no another chance or next time, after they lose the very one. That means we should regard each time as the last chance, and treasure it. Plus, mistakes sometimes will make people afraid or lose confidence.

In sum, if we want children to develop well, we have to allow children learn from mistakes rather than allowing them to make mistakes without good preparation.
