In order for any work of art—for example, a film, a novel, a poem, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people. The claim asserts that in order for any work of art to have merit, it must be understandable to most people. I totally agree with that for any kind of art is created to convey some kinds of feelings that generate from the authors’ inner thoughts or designed to facilitate a movement or so. If these works cannot play such roles, they hardly make any sense and may even be mistakenly treated and be used to improper purposes.
The common standard of whether a work is significant or meaningless is whether it can inspire readers or not. Only those which can be digested by most people can be widely spread and conserved. When the United States was in its hard time when fighting with the British, someone designed the Song of Strip Flag, which inspired so much people that they became more united and confident and won the battle at last. The song is therefore be qualified the national anthem. Another example is that the famous poem to The Sea. When
we talk about poem,
almost all of us can think of the sentence that “Life is dear, love is dearer. Both can be given up for freedom”,which transfers the significance of freedom that are indispensible in our lives and is adored by so many people that still has great influence on people’s choice of attitudes towards life.
However, if we cannot really understand the merit of a work, we may evaluate the work unfairly and block the development of it. Western artists regarded nature as beauty, so when they created sculptures or drawings, they spontaneously left the characters undressed, which could not be accepted by easterners that they just ignored the value of such works. In the past decades, the meaningful works of western artists have not received respect deserved, which are mostly due to the lack of knowledge of merits in such works. There are also famous unjustifiably treatment for some ancient poets in China who wrote some poems that were partially understood and they were put into prison as a result.
In summary, only if a work is accepted by most people can it deserves broadcast and conservation. So if an artist is to achieve meaningful fame, it’s his or her duty to make his works understood and accepted by the majority of people. |
