The table gives information about the percentage of various categories of households living in poverty in Australia in 1999.
Obviously, the proportion of aged couple or single aged person living in poverty was much lower that that of families in the early and middle adulthood. Aged couple,with only 4% living in poverty, was slightly better off than single aged person ,for which the percentage was 6% .
These families with no children generally tended to be better off than families have children. Specifically, The proportion stood at 19% for single parent with no children, whereas 21% of sole parent families were living in poverty. This trend was not restricted to single adult families, the proportion of couples with no children living in poverty was 5% lower than that of couples with children.
We can also conclude from the table that single-parent families tended to be worse off than families with couples. Actually, the proportion of single adults and those with children living in poverty was almost twice as many as that of families consists of couple, regardless of the number of children in these families.
On average, the proportion of families living in poverty was 11% in Australia in 1999.
