The speaker cites year 1999's guideline to argue that three points mentioned in the reading are not up-to-date. Several policies have been implemented to assuage the problem that archaeology faces in the UK.
First, any site should be examined before the construction projects take place. According to the guideline, the construction company should hire archaeology expert to examine whether the site is of potential archaeological interest or value. If it is a archaeologically valuable site, the company and the government should make a plan together concerning the way to preserve this site. For example, they may build around this site to avoid future damage to the artifacts or excavate precious artifacts and document them before any construction. In this way, valuable artifacts will not suffer from the damage caused by construction projects.
Second, there is a new source of funds for archaeology projects: construction companies. If the site is examined and confirmed to possess precious artifacts, the company must pay for all the cost during the preservation activities. That includes the initial examination fee, preservation fee, so on and so forth. Therefore, lack of government financial support will not cause negative effects on archaeology.
Third, There are many new positions for archaeologists and these positions are well paid. In fact, all stages of site preservation projects need expert to participate in. Examining the construction site, making protection plans, doing relative research, processing data and writing final reports, All of these tasks need people who are specialized in archaeology. Therefore, there should be no worry about insufficient jobs for archaeology experts. (260)
