The world is now changing in an unprecedented fast pace, and there are new technologies, concept, or products coming up every day. They surely make our lives more convenient and provide more ways for entertaining. But I agree with the belief that the world’s fast changing actually makes people less happy. I will introduce below some principal concepts incorporated in the assessment of gross national happiness known as GNH, which is widely accepted as a way to measure the happiness of residents of different countries to elaborate on my statement.
First, usually the more time one spends with his family and friends, the happier he is, while the fact is that the world’s fast changing makes people spend more time on working or studying and less time with their family and friends. For instances, with the rapid improvement of science and technologies, what students in college need to learn now not only increase in amount but in complexity as well, and when these new science and technologies are introduced to industrial , the workers have to spend lots of time to learn about them in order to keep capable of their jobs. And with the rapid emerging of new companies, the competition between them are enlarged too, this always means employees have to work harder.
Second, the income gap between a person and people around him has significant influence on his happiness. Nowadays with the rapid speed of new products and corporations replacing old ones, there are lots of people obtain tremendous fortune, while lots of people unfortunately loss their jobs. It leads to a huge income gap between members of communities where residents used to have similar income. For example, in my hometown, during 1960s’ to 1990s’, the life style of the inhabitants there had little change. They all lived on farming, they had similar minor income, but they are satisfied with their lives, most of them feel happy. However, now although most people have increased their income dramatically and have more leisure time comparing to the past, lots of them constantly complain about their lives and don’t feel as happy as before, because some of their neighbors are richer than them.
In conclusion, people now are facing a so much bigger pressure from work, school, or neighbors due to the world’s rapid changing. So there is no doubt that people are less happy now.
