Recently, a famous educational magazine called "Educator" released an article stating that professors should not spend more time in researching than in educating students. After reading that, I strongly agree with this argument. The reasons are listed as follows:
To begin with, the university is a place where teachers pass on the useful and valuable knowledge and wisdom to students. In order words, educating students is the professors' major responsibilities and obligations. For instance, it is the economy professors' job to teach the students about the basic concept of the economy, financial situation, how to invest wisely and lower the risks of investment. Before entering the university, a large majority of students do not have a full understanding of the economy and that is one of the reasons they choose to major in economy. They are desire to learn the relevant knowledge from their professors. In this case, the school and the professors could not let the students down. Instead, it is advisable for professors to spare no efforts to educate the students.
Secondly, with the rapid development of the economy and society, human resources plays an crucial role in promoting the development of the society. Most importantly, the education level of the whole society is the mark of the improvement of the human resources. As we all know, good education is largely attributed to the professor. If professors spend more and more time on improving the quality of education, caring about the students academic performance, a large number of superior students will surge. Furthermore, the students can put what they learn from the professors into the real practice to help boost the society and economy. To some degree, the professors have the direct influence on the development of the society. Therefore, it is essential for professor to spend more time in educating than in researching.
Admittedly, doing researches can help professors have deep understanding of one particular field. Also, it has been proved that the advanced technology and the valuable discovery are the results of a series of successful researches. However, no matter how successful the researches are, they should be ultimately educated to the students. That is, researches serve for education.
To sum up, only when the professors spend more time in educating than in researching can the students arm themselves with useful knowledge and put the knowledge into practice. In this way, not only the students but also the whole society will benefit greatly from it.
