Issue73: In most professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge.
I agree that imagination plays an irreplaceable role in academic fields, because it is imagination that directs our interest and effort(s) to those unknown areas, while imagination itself is based on the foundation of knowledge. It is hard to say which is more important than the other because they are interrelated to each other, just like the paradox of the origin of egg and hen.
Imagination is the primary driving force to (the) advance(d) new ideas and knowledge in academic activities. Human being have a strong interest and desire to explore the unknown world in daily work, especially those puzzling issues. This kind of aspiration for knowledge and cognition is guided first by imagination, which can both find a sound explanation for questions and describe a visual world full of fascination. For example, the famous carpenter in ancient China, Luban, designed a aircraft out of wood without consumption of energy, whose idea originated from observation of flying bird , which intrigued the imagination of Luban to fly like a bird. His aircraft, though failed to fly for a lasting time, was the prototype of today's fuel driving planes (today’s planes driven by fuels). Generally speaking, any great inventions or theories derive (is derived) from free imagination. Another example is Einstein, one of the greatest physicists in history. He developed his imagination of traveling in the cosmos at the velocity of light, which may be the direct source (that drove/driving) drove him to devote himself to the research of cosmos and ultimately brought about the far-reaching contribution, (the great theory of relativity) relative theories.
Without imagination, no invention or creative breakthrough of knowledge can be reached. Routine work is necessary to keep the running of the world, but does little to advance(d) knowledge due to lack of imagination. Many office clerks complain that their job is rather boring and sometimes disgusting. This kind of unpleasantness can be attributed to the lack of imagination. Why important invention sounds interesting and novel to most people? Because it goes beyond those conventional ways to cope with problems.
In turn , it is knowledge that develops imagination, because as one type of ideology, imagination comes from concept or notion acquired through perceiving the world with sensitive organs. No matter how ridiculous an imagination seems to be, it has reasonable ground that can be found in life or nature. For example, the ancient Chinese people dreamed of flying to the moon, which is based on the knowledge that the moon is something like the earth with large areas of land and the knowledge of flying like a bird. By contrast, could we expect a newborn with vacuous mind to have this imagination? Nowadays, with the deep exploration of outer space, people imagined that there could be more celestial systems with the same or even more complex structures than solar system, and scientist(s) are taking great efforts to verify whether there are creatures in outer space. The more people get to know about the world, the more they want to know. As a result, with the development and enrichment of knowledge, people own more profound imagination.
In sum, imagination and knowledge is inextricably interrelated and cannot be separated to evaluate their importance respectively. The accumulation of knowledge leads to more interesting imagination, which in turn brings driving force for human being to explore the unknown world and to obtain more knowledge. In this endless cycle, knowledge and human society head toward a more advanced world. |
