it very depends on subject, but publication is always the least deciding factor for a good research school. the most critical issue is up to your PhD supervisor (sv). my sv gave my the hottest projects (tons of money invested in this field by gov.), and transferred a grant's PI to me (which proved I had funding application capacity, and independent PI experience).  my sv has a huge name in Mech. Eng., and referred me to nearly 20 good universities in North America for an AP position. So, funding ability, PI experience, Bao Da Tui, good PhD school name are way more essential than paper. another fresh Phd in my group (non-caucasian) got an AP at a tier1 public univ. in the US just ago, with only 1 accepted paper.

changing to finance is also my dream, but not realistic for now. planning to get a MBA or Master of Finance after several years work. Anyway, Congratulations!

check math finance master's at Waterloo, mostly 4000 bucks times 3 terms, co-op, no educational background restriction for admission

谢谢回复。我看美国一些BBS上，他们觉得最重要的也是有没有独立申请到经费的经历。看来还是经费是学校最看重的。

Big Cong!感觉做自己喜欢的才是最重要的！ 前辈的SV 是研究Mech.Eng. 我猜你以前应该也是学Mech.Eng.是吗？
想请教一下，我想去读Mech.Eng 的Msc, 以后想直接投奔工业界，不想往上读Phd了，想做做有限元分析之类的。听说找COOP跟就读学校地理位置关系很大。而且我比较想去Calgary London Waterloo Ottawa 这几个地方，不知道这几个地区的机械相关企业怎么样。跪求前辈指点！

doing a phd will end up with being jobless, though. Pick calgary, a lot of opportunity out there. Westen@london, and Ottawa are the schools for Wen Ke Sheng.

as long as you are wealthy, u can publish tons of toilet paper in open access sources. university doesnt care ur damn research, they do only care $$$

这个观点有些太extreme了吧。你没文章哪里来钱。就是在美国，拿自然科学基金也是要靠文章的。没有文章，根本拿不到tenure,估计三年合同后就被赶走。
