Fall 2017: Call for applications for PhD students in Geographic Information Science

The GIS research team in the Department of Geography and Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Connecticut seeks one or more creative and motivated PhD students with a strong Computer science background to join us in the Spring of 2018. The PhD student is expect to further our existing work on Geospatial Semantic Web and develop software and tools for improving the performance of spatial knowledge queries of the National Map in efficient platforms such as computing clusters and GPUs, which is the goal of one recently funded project from USGS. The PhD students will have the opportunity to be involved in interdisciplinary collaborative research (GIS and Computer Science). We expect the PhD students 1) have BA/BS in computer science or GIS, better with Master degree; 2) experience in software development; 3) ability to clearly present results and their importance; 4) have interests in geo-information technologies and mapping. Applicants do not need to have expertise in Geography, GIS or Geospatial Semantic Web. We are seeking candidates with specific knowledge and skills in computer science. Successful applicants will have additional opportunities to work on other research projects related to geo-information.
About 80 percent of data are geospatial data and about 60-80 percent of all political, economic and private decisions are space/location oriented. Geo-information or GIS is a rapidly growing industry worldwide. GIS can be used for solving many real-world problems and complex issues, such as disaster management, natural resource evaluation, environmental problems, biodiversity, human health issues, urban planning, energy, food and water security. Recently, GIS has expanded its user scope to many organizations where geospatial information plays an important role, such as government agencies, research institutes, and industry companies. In 2013, a report prepared by Oxera and commissioned by Google found that the global geo services generated $150-$270 billion in revenues. This was equivalent to the $140 billion revenues generated from the global security services industry or about one-third of the revenues ($494 billion) from the global airline industry at that time. More importantly, Geo industry is increasing with the speed around 20% per year.  The major mainstream IT companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, SAP, Mapquest, Yelp, Oracle and automobile, infrastructure, utility and even consulting companies have entered the geo-location business.
The GIS PhD students are expected to have many opportunities to find a job in academia, government, or industry after graduation.

Strong applicants will be contacted by scheduling an informal interview over Skype. Financial support for Ph.D. students is available from research assistantships.

学校排名不低， 我GPA肯定是不过关了~~~考英语也是半年前的事情了。

对留美找工作的肯定不错， 但如果是CS专业转过去，之后想进高校当老师估计就有点难了吧。

又来指个路 ， 找到一亩三分地 12年 某人汇总的EE帖子，里面写到

学校对于硬件的要求不低，基本上每年能够拿到录取或是offer的学生G1300， IBT 90+， GPA 3.3+ 。

12年啊，现在17年了，GPA膨胀~~~哪怕不是CS、EE方向的，3.3 估计也没跑了
