ISSUE2   People’s attitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surroundings than by any internal characteristic.

How individual’s attitudes and values are determined? The speaker argued that immediate situation and surroundings play significant roles on that and I really appreciate this contention. However, I should add that the speaker also overlooked the significance of internal factors that greatly impact people’s attitudes and values.
Undoubtedly, people’s attitudes and values are profoundly influenced by immediate situation. As we are born and living social animals, our basic values are set in a social environment. What we regard right or wrong, feel happy or sad, all greatly determined by what we observed and copied in growing experiences, that means, we tend to regard things with the standard and attitudes which the people around us hold and we accept them favorably. Also, even we grow more mature, most of us still tend to be impacted by the ideas and comment of the media and the public, even though we consider them more critically than before. Besides, the custom and culture of one’s nation also impact people’s attitudes a lot, as we accept some traditional performances and customs, our minds can also be cultivated easily thereby.
Secondly, people’s attitudes and values are easily impacted by our relatives and friends. Every individual has his or her intimates, and form their small communities thereby. People with common share usually get together, and tend to influence each other’s attitudes and values. Consider, why youngsters tend to have likenesses in common and why some people in one family tend to have work in the same fields? It is the effect of influence from our intimates. People live or work together often have more chance to touch other’s words and beliefs, then they will think over it and charge whether it is right or wrong; if they regard the other’s attitudes and values are proper and right, they will surly accept it. And if they have no idea about something, other’s words and deals will also inspire them. Therefore, people live or work together often influence each other, and even form certain atmosphere and resemble style of thinking. Also, we are strongly impacted by the attitudes of our teachers, family members as we regarded them as examples when we grew up.
However, how we are influenced by our intimates and surroundings are determined by our internal characteristics. Though the members in a small community are under the same atmosphere, people still grow up with their own personalities. Humanity has the ability to charge and value other’s words, then analyze them. Therefore, people become more distinctive as we grow bigger. Facing with the manners and attitudes, we become more considerable and more sensitive. Consider, people are less influenced than youngster stage as their internal characteristic are more settled and the analyzing ability become more mature.
That means, when we are more mature, we are less determined by immediate situations and surroundings, but more independent and more determined by our internal characters.
In sum, we cannot tell or conclude too easily with the fact that how our attitudes and values are determined. All creatures are the marriages of surrounding influence and internal character, and we should not overlook the effect of either factors in our ideas and doings thereby. Besides, we should develop sound awareness with our surroundings, and try not to follow other’s ideas blindly and rationally; whatever, we are the master of ourselves.
