The relationship of immediate problems of today and those of anticipated in the future are always the issues that raise the most heated controversies. Facing finite resources, which kind of problems should be put in the first place? Opinion varies from individual to individual. As far as I am concerned, both of the two deserve our efforts, attention and energy while we can try to find a balance between them for the greatest good of human being.

To begin with, solving pressing problems at the moment is one of the most important responsibilities and tasks of our governments. While many people today are still faced with the pains brought about by wars, violence, starvation, poverty, unemployment and in short of some basic skills and resource in order to survive in the world. If our governments are not devoted to relieving such human sufferings, our human society will hardly be regarded to gain any progress in humanity and civilization. Although some of the social ills spring from something of human nature and might continue to exist in the long run, we have no right to give up the efforts to deal with them. Consider, one of the most affluent societies in the world, say America, now is still making every effort to probe into and trying to handle some most compelling social problems in existence, like crimes, drug use and unemployment, in order to maintain the stability and harmony on a large scale.

On the other hand, some anticipated problems of the future which will have great impacts on the survival of our human beings should not be overlooked yet. We will not only be selfish parents and grandparents but also, to some extent, unforgivable sinners or criminals, to our offspring if we only take account for the need of ourselves at the present time. Such problems as the environmental pressures have great bearing on the overall well-beings and survival of humankind. If the nature environment we are depending on now someday amounts to be severely destroyed, how does one pin hopes on the prosperity and development of himself/herself? It is almost known to all that the destruction of ozone layer, due to undue emission of certain chemical substance from refrigerators, will threaten the human body by failing to protect them from harmful radiations of the sun.

It is true that sometimes the finite social and natural resource of human being cannot be both put to perfect use in solving both the immediate problems to today and those anticipated ones, however, we can develop some better ways to handle with them. Since neither of the problems deserve our efforts and call for the society’s attention and emphasis, it will be fine that we assign each kind of problems some resource according to a moderate proportion. That is to say, our government should make good use of finite financial and natural resource on both the pressing problems and anticipated ones in the future. It is no wonder that many industrial societies in the world are starting to set limits on the emission of waste water and exhausting gases while guaranteeing the basic and legitimate economic concern of commercial activities. We can try to achieve a balance between meeting the urgent needs of today and maintaining sustainable development.

In the final analysis, I believe that governments should play active role in both the solutions of immediate problems and anticipated problems of the future. Were anyone of them overlooked, the humankind might encounter great panic and disorder and even disasters at present or in the future.
