How much is good English worth? No one could give it a definite monetary value. But no one denies the importance of a good command of English. From experience, we know that people with high English proficiency often hold higher positions and get higher salaries than others with less English ability. At least this is true in fast moving cities like Beijing and Shanghai. However, the lesser known is that people can actually be happier by learning and using English.

As we said, it is a very difficult task to do the pricing for English. For thousands of people, learning English is an excruciating experience. They’ve spent a fortune in buying all kinds of English grammar books, vocabulary books, test coaching books, and so on. They attended or are rushing to English courses to improve speaking or test crashing skills. They follow the ideas and approaches of popular trainers or university professors. But with all the time, money, and efforts thrown in, the study all seems like a gigantic rip-off. Don’t quote your test scores. High scores could be deceiving. Speaking is believing. Writing is believing. Not until we can comfortably converse in English and produce well-written articles could we say that our English is sufficient.

What makes a successful English learner? There is no easy answer either. People start English learning at different age and their strategies vary widely. Generally, the longer people study, the more knowledge they would have about it. Ironically, knowledge doesn’t automatically evolve into ability. Sometimes we wish to have a bank where we could exchange English knowledge into ability as we do with foreign currencies. A big pipe dream, right? Technically we need way more than textbooks to become skilled in English. And what we lack is too abstract and frustratingly complex to be taken out, categorized, analyzed and taught in the way we do in schools.

English, as a language, couldn’t, and shouldn’t, be only defined as a tool or a system comprised of a number of vowels, consonants, and rules. It also couldn’t be exhaustively described and presented in any single or combination of textbooks. Language is culture, language is habit, and language is part of the life itself. Pretty much like people have different life styles, people should also deal with English learning on a case-by-case basis. However, most people don’t have the expertise and time to find out what is the best way to improve English and how to tackle their problems efficiently and wisely. This has now become the mission of a new breed of English coaches.

I have a good friend who believes in the saying: Nothing is impossible. She’s made very good progress in English shortly after joining my training programs. Now she often delights me by saying “My God, I’m so busy these days. I hate to miss my English learning time! ” I realize that she now starts to appreciate the fun in language learning and that the progress she’s made motivates her to work for more. Eventually she’ll become one of the happy people who speak excellent English in presentations, conferences, and business trips overseas. Just like we enjoy yummy food, we now enjoy yummy English. Differences? Yummy food could add a few pounds to your weight. But Yummy English could only make your life happier and more successful.
