Are the nonmainstream areas truly vital to society, for they can satisfy the human needs that are not addressed by main stream science? In my view, it is true that nonmainstream areas satisfy human needs in some sense, but when come to the issue whether they are vital to the society, people need to conduct case-by-case study into different nonmainstream areas and give answers respectively.

Firstly, astrology and fortune-telling which are pseudoscience do satisfy some kinds of human needs and play a specific role in human life, especially in the past. However, the satisfaction they bring about may be more harmful than beneficial. There are lots of factors, many of which are out of the control of people, affect the results of a certain behavior, which makes people feel uncertain about themselves. People are afraid that the decision they make will result in some terrible effects, and they are too frail to take the responsibly alone. Therefore, People turn to something greater for help or advice. They consult the stars, read tea leaves, stare at a crystal ball, all of which actually give no constructive suggestions, but they pacify people, and make people feel relief. But, is the peace they gain really pacify them? And can they truly relieve? Emphatically, no. It is just like seeking peace from wine, or tell lie to cheat oneself. People should not seek a way merely let them forget the pain for a little while, but actually remedy the pain, which is something astrology and fortune-telling cannot accomplish. Fortune-telling and astrology make people rely on some unreliable outer force and lose the identity of their own power gradually which may lead to an attitude of sloth and passiveness. And that kind of attitude would no doubt restrain the development of the society.

Secondly, the areas like psychic and paranormal pursuits which mainly satisfy human curiosity and enthusiasm to the unknown actually promote the progress of the mainstream science, and are crucial to the society. Admittedly, mainstream science have developed greatly especially in the recent decades, however, there are also a host of phenomenon that can not be explained by mainstream science, such as the essence of life, extra- terrestrials, psychic power, and paranormal abilities. On one hand, the pursuers of psychic and paranormal phenomenon endeavor to dig out strange events all over the world, and try to give them rational explanations. It is true, these kind of pursuits are largely driven by pure curiosity and serve as a way to satisfy curiosity, but there is still something more significant—the deep conviction in and persistent endeavor to find the truth, to which the paranormal pursuers’ enthusiasm may be even greater than the scientists’, though the pursuers may be blind in some sense. In a nutshell, psychic and paranormal pursuits help the society to maintain the curiosity and enthusiasm to the unknown, and deeply convince that there are ways to explain the unknown. On the other hand, the boundary between science and paranormal pursuit is sometimes vague, and serious inquiry in to paranormal activities may assist or at least give hint to science. For example, many modern psychology textbooks spend whole chapters discussing holy stigma, ability to move objects by psychic power, mind reading which are believed to be psychic and paranormal pursuits in the past. And the psychologists also use the documentation made by the paranormal pursuers to help their studies.   

Form the analysis above, it is clear that some of nonmainstream area, such as fortune-telling and pseudoscience denies the power of human and are harmful to the society. While, when it comes to psychic and paranormal pursuit which encourage people to explore the unknown are vital to society.
