TOPIC: ARGUMENT26 - The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.

"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

In this argument the auger recommends that the Salude school board should hire Mr. Charless Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. To bolster this recommendation the arguer points out the evidence that during his position, the school band has won three regional band competitions and the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and music instruments at Steel City high (S) has improved markedly. Up on careful examination it is found how groundless this evidence is.

The threshold problem of this argument is that the arguer shows some seeming correlationship between the fact that Mr. Charless Schade has been the music director at S and the fact that the school band from S has won three regional band competitions. This mere corelationship lends little support the assumed cause-and-effect relationship. It is highly likely that this band had always performed outstandingly in the competitions. Or perhaps the responsibility of Mr. Charless Schade was only to teach the direct courses rather than to be a director of the school band. For this matter, the arguer's assumption on the cause-and -effect relationship would have little merit.

Another problem should be stressed for this argument is that the fact that the quality of and the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and music instruments at Steel City high (S) has improved markedly occurs in the position of the Mr. Charless Schade is not a necessary indication of that Mr. Charless Schade plays a role in its improvement. It is possible that another person who is responsible for the management of the music rehearsal facilities and music instruments rather than Mr. Charles. If so the arguer's additional assumption would be unwarranted.

The last problem with this statement that should be considering is that even though the arguer's assumption foregoing are convincing, which of course is a unwarranted assumption, the arguer's recommendation that the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Charless Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system is still open to doubt. The good performance in the director and management in the music department does not necessarily indicate that Mr. Charless Schade would be a suitable person for planning the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. Without any evidence about that he is a professor or a experienced person in the management of the whole school system, it would be folly to follow the arguer's recommendation.

To sum up, this recommendation relies on several unpersuasive assumptions, which all together render it unwarranted. To strength this recommendation the arguer should provide more information to valid the cause-and -effect relationship between the Mr. Charless Schade influence in the winner ship of the school band the improvement on the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and music instruments at Steel City high and to substantiate that he is a most proper person for the management of the whole school system in general music education.

２即使是上面一点有必然关系，也不能说明“不因为感冒看医生”证明“人们感冒的次数少”。所以不能得出“吃大量鱼能预防感冒”的结论。
３即使“吃大量鱼能预防感冒”的结论成立，但鱼油能否代替鱼值得怀疑。
４缺勤和感冒没有必然关系。
