36."The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
1.首先,只有后代人才可以给出比较全面评价
2.同代人的观点总是受到当时时代和社会因素的影响
3.但是后代评价可能会忽略一些当时重视的素质

For everybody is a mixture, blended with successfulness and failure, merits and demerits, intelligence and foolishness. And people always are limited by times which lead them to choose and think, finally people may have limited minds about things and mankind, so the judger and the being judged all failed to be comprehensive. However, when judging, as younger generations, it is quite possible to miss some points due to historical reasons.
To begin with, when judging, it is the basic principle to stand on the wholeness. Because judging, to the privy being decided, is cure,it is unfair to judge person during his or her life, because no results comes out, any judgment would be biased. For a prisoner, we should not decide him or her moral or immoral due to the passed crimes. And, as contemporaries, encouragements and concern should be given in order to help him or her begin new life. It is the same to the person who experienced success. There are always examples. Someone is famous when youth finally become mediocre. Even the judgment effects on this young man leading to arrogant mood, and the judge is the chief reason for the later mediocre life. So only the descendants have more comprehensive material to be based on and have the rights to give evaluation as a whole.
The contemporary judgments are always limited because of times and environment which failed them to comment and consider comprehensively. For different era is characterized by temporal politics and philosophy. For example, nowadays the judgment on Napoleon is much fairer, because the achievements and faults are all displayed. And comments on him will not effected due to political elements. Recent commentaries on him are all mixed with merits and demerits, appreciation and depreciation. And what about Schubert who were not paid attention to when he was alive because he live under the dark govern of feudal Austria? What about Von Gogh? During his lifetime, he sold only one painting (Red Vineyard at Arles), and was little known to the art world at the time of his death, but his fame grew rapidly thereafter. His influence on Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction was enormous ,and it can be seen in many other aspects of 20th-centurt art. But he lead a poor life due to the bias of his poor origin and some metal problems also was the main reason.
But the descendants will probably miss some details of the privy, because some historical reasons, for example, some historical material lost. That would directly failed the descendants to have a comprehensive understand of the privy. And some life details would not be recorded, but possibly reflects some main qualifications of an individual.
To conclude, I quite agree that a person should be decided by younger generations, for the judgment would be much more fair and comprehensive. What is more, the contemporaries are inclined to be limited due to the ear and the environment, so the judgment would be quite biased. However, that does not mean I would agree the statement without query, because, as time goes by, some important proof will be lost. |
