Argument17 "Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

In this letter, the author suggest that Walnut Grove's town council should continue cooperating with EZ Disposal, albeit EZ Disposal raised its monthly fee to $2500 which is higher 25% than that of ABC Waste. For bolstering his claim, the author cited some facts about EZ Disposal and ABC Waste. 1. EZ Disposal has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years. 2 EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. 3.EZ Disposal has more trucks than do ABC Waste. 4.EZ can provide excellent service:80 percent of respondents in a last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance. It seems quite reasonable for Walnut Grove's town council to continue making a contract with EZ at first glance. However, close scrutiny to these facts reveals that there are fallacies and unconvincing as it stands.
First, the author did not provide the reason why EZ raise its monthly fee by 25%.Is it the factor that EZ Disposal collect trash twice a week? If so, how many times a week had EZ collect trash before it raised its fee? The author did not give proof, too. On the contrary, he pointed that ABC company collect trash only once a week. Is twice a week better than once a week for Walnut Grove's town? For this question, the author should provide the amount of trash in Walnut Grove's town in detail. It is possible that there are few trash needing to be collect in Walnut Grove's town. Once a week is suffice to keep the environment of Walnut Grove's town in order. Why do Walnut Grove's town council adopt EZ and cost additional $500?
Secondly, the author provided the proof that EZ ,like ABC, currently own a fleet of 20 trucks ,has ordered additional trucks. It seems that the service of EZ is superior to that of ABC. Considering the fact that EZ has cooperated with Walnut Grove's town council for ten years, there may be many out-dated trucks. It is entirely possible that many of its 20 trucks can not work well. So as for the number of trucks is concerned, it can not convince me that the service of EZ is better than that of ABC.
Thirdly, the author provided a survey conducted last year. It indicated in the survey that 80% of all participants were satisfied with the performance of EZ. How about the service from ABC? It is possible that many more participants will be content with the service of ABC. Why do not the author do a survey about the performance of ABC? So why do not Walnut Grove's town council swift from EZ to ABC at a lower cost?
Furthermore, it is possible that the methods adopted by ABC is more convenient to environment than those of EZ. For an example, ABC adopt the latest technology to dispose trash which do not produce any pollution into air, while EZ adopts an out-fashioned way to cope with trash that will bring great deal of pollutions into the environment.
Overall, the reasoning about continuing cooperating with EA seems logical as presented in the argument. But through deep analysis, the proof provided by the author can not make me feel his conclusion credible. To support his suggestion, the author should take into account many more facts except those mentioned above. |
