May 15, 2007 Dark Matter Halo May Mark Ancient Galactic Collision
Astronomers see no visible matter in a new dark matter ring
By JR Minkel

RINGS MARKS THE SPOT:  A composite image from the Hubble Space Telescope depicts the location of an invisible ring of dark matter (light blue outer ring).
Astronomers say they have found a vast ring of dark matter, the enigmatic substance that seems to make up most of the mass in the universe, encircling a cluster of galaxies five billion light-years away. If true, the discovery would mark the first time that dark matter has followed a much different shape than that of the visible matter it surrounds, highlighting the difference between the two types of matter. At a NASA press conference today, the astronomers said the ring may have formed one billion to two billion years ago, after a collision between two galactic clusters caused the surrounding dark matter to ripple outward like a stone dropped in water. Some experts, however, say the ring may be nothing more than a kind of optical illusion.
Researchers do not know what dark matter is, but they invoke it to explain why galactic clusters have enough gravity to hold themselves together. Although dark matter does not reflect light—hence the name—astronomers can detect the way its gravity bends the light of distant stars behind it, an effect called gravitational lensing. Prior studies of dark matter have found that galaxies and other visible matter float inside blobs of dark matter, like white chocolate chips in a dark cookie. So whatever shape the dark matter takes, such as a ring, it ought to carry galaxies with it. A team using the Hubble Space Telescope found the invisible ring, which extends 2.6 million light-years across [see image above], while mapping the distribution of dark matter in the galaxy cluster CL 0024+17. Astronomer M. James Jee of Johns Hopkins University says that at first he thought it was a glitch in the data. Now, he says, "we believe this is the strongest evidence yet for the existence of dark matter," adding that "no such kind of structure has been reported in the past." A prior study suggested that CL 0024+17 had collided with another galactic cluster one billion to two billion years ago. Jee and colleagues simulated cluster collisions and found that the force of the event would slosh the surrounding dark matter outward into a ring, they report in a paper to appear June 20 in The Astrophysical Journal. The result is interesting, but the evidence that the ring lacks visible matter is unconvincing so far, says astronomer Douglas Clowe of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. "Even if the ring is real, it's not at all clear that it also is not seen in the galaxy distribution," he says. Astronomer Dennis Zaritsky of the University of Arizona in Tucson notes that the ring could result from a chance alignment of dark matter lumps along Hubble's line of sight. There have been a few other reported claims of pure dark matter, Zaritsky says. "In the end, those things all went away."

May 14, thanks to Mr. Butt

A heart beats 3 billion times in an average life span, and sometimes those beats race, like when you run into a grisly bear, or climb stairs or fall in love. Such moments can more than double the average heart rate of 70 beats per minute, speeding  it up to 160 beats. And we feel it-palpitations, dizziness, breathlessness. Scientists have a good idea what causes a racing heart an increase in adrenaline in(no in)sends a signal to the pacemaker cell located in the upper-right chamber. The cell then sets off  a domino effect that speeds up the muscle contractions. What scientists don't understand though is what makes the heart beats slow back down. But a team at the University of Illinois at Chicago city found a promising clue. If isolated enzyme called p-21 activated kinases or PAK-1 that affects electrical channels inside the pacemaker cell. Scientists have shown that by turning on PAK-1 they can reduce electrical channel activity and slow down the heart. They’re now working on finding a drug treatment that can control this enzyme, hoping that medicine might replace artificial pacemakers. Be still my beating heart.

May 15, Thanks to Mr. Butt

You've probably heard that the world's honeybees have suffered stinging losses lately, that's a big story for us too. Up to 12 billion dollars in crops rely on the fuzzy fliers for pollination, of the 2.4 million honeybee colonies in the U.S. about 1 million died off this past winter. Big declines have also been seen in Europe and Asia. The die-off has been dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder and the Vanishing Bee Syndrome. A couple of species of mites that attack bees were responsible for similar die-offs in the winters of 95, 96 and 2000, 2001, and the mites may be partly to blame for the most recent honeybee losses, but a quarter of the current carnage seems unrelated to mites or any other pests. Other suggested causes of the bee decline include genetically modified foods, parasites, pesticides, and cell phone radiation. But bee expert Nicholas Calderone of Cornell University said last week that the definitive cause remains elusive, he will spend this summer investigating honeybee colonies throughout the northeast trying to solve the case of dead bees. Here's hoping he buzzes in with an answer.

Episode 178: May 17, 2007

You don’t hear a lot of positive news about herpes, but a new study in the May 17th issue of the journal of nature shows that in some cases a herpes virus infection might actually be really good for you. Individual mice with chronic herpes virus infections were better able to ward off some deadly bacteria including the one that causes plague and another that causes food poisoning. Now there are many kinds of herpes viruses not just general herpes. Other viruses include chickenpox, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr and some less known(这个词不确定,谐音好像是lesanon) viruses that actually permanently infect(谢谢forerunner指正) most humans without ever producing any significant symptoms. The researchers think that the key is the constant presence of latent herpes virus infection in which the viruses always present but is not really causing problems most of the time. Nevertheless the immune system reacts to the virus and somehow more able to take on the additional threats. Some herpes virus infections are certainly major(谢谢forerunner指正) problems but new finding shows that we still have much to learn about the impacts of the other life forms that we carry.
今天的比较容易,呵呵。大家要坚持啊。
看了forerunner的指正后再听了一遍,做了修改。

Other viruses include chickenpox, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr and some ethanol (lesser-known ‘I’m not sure’) viruses that actually permanently infect most humans without ever producing any significant symptoms. The researchers think that the key is the constant presence of latent herpes virus infection in which the viruses always present but is not really causing problems most of the time. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), is a genus of Herpes viruses; in humans the species is known as Human herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5). It belongs to the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily of Herpesviridae. The name means "very big cell virus".

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also called Human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is a virus of the herpes family (which includes Herpes simplex virus and Cytomegalovirus), and is one of the most common viruses in humans.

May 16, 2007: 60-Second Science
Giant Ring of Dark Matter
Most of the universal stuff is apparently dark matter—invisible material pervading the universe and supplying the balk of gravitational attraction holding galaxy clusters together. The matter contained in the visible stars in the clusters just is enough to keep the cluster from flying apart. Now comes one of the strongest pieces of evidence for dark matter. The Hobble Space Telescope was found would look like a ghostly ring, the remnant to massive collision between two galaxy clusters sometimes in the last 2 billion years. The ring is about 2.6 light million light years across the lives, and 5 million light years from the earth. A John Hopkins research team noticed the ring, they can’t directly see it of course, but they inferred its existence because of its gravity being the light more distant galaxy than the background. One researcher was initially annoyed with the ring because there seems soon to be some problem or error. A literature researcher though turned the evidence of collision between collected cluster near the ring, and a computer simulation showed that the dark matter ring wouldn’t deep result like the ripples on a pond
