clyde630提纲:
第一次:ARGUMENT25 - The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell.
"Two years ago, the town of Ocean View built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. During the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. The best way to improve Hopewell's economy, and generate additional tax revenues, is to build a golf course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View."
1. the arguer fails to figure out that two towns are valid to be compared with each other, that is, the situations are almost the same.
2. he fails to prove that the increase of tourism and rising of tax are attributable to the building a new golf course.
3.As the golf course was built 2 years ago,the arguer is supposed to figure out it still works at present to build a golf course in order to increase tourism and tax.
ARGUMENT35 - The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.
"Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia."
1.although salicylates are members of aspirin, it doesn't indicat salicylates can cure headaches unless the arguer gives cogent evidences to prove that.
2.he doesn't eliminate other contents in food that might cure headaches
3.he fails to articulate that rise in use of salicylates in commerce are correlated to the steady decline of headaches.
4.the conclusion that with a new use of salicylates, the number of people suffering headaches is to decline steadily is unconvincing.
ISSUE207 - "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
position: I agree with the statement
1. through some specific r and c, people can tell what culture it is. examples, chinese sping festivals, Xmase. so r and c help define a culture. r and c is one of the most significant signiture of a culture.
2.by r and c, peolple can have a sense of who they are, and from r and c, people can learn its tradition, history, and increase their sense of patriotism.
3.unluckily, as globalization, more and more r and c are disappearing, all people are acting as the all come from they westen countries.
4.people should begin to protect their specific r and c, and of course ,their cultures, so that our descendants can learn their brillant cultures, to preserve r and c is to maintain culture diversity, which is good for the whole world and mankind to develop
ISSUE5 - "A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
position: nation should require its students to learn the same core curriculum, like, the official language, math, science, politics, etc, and allow schools in different places of the country to some paricular course about their own hometown.
1. a nation wide curriculum courses can guarantee the quality of education.
2. allow schools to set some curriculum about their own local cultures are good to conserve some particular local traditions, and students can also have a better understanding of their hometown.
3. therefore, the best way to cultivate its all students for a nation is to combine the two.
第二次:ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."
1.the pool of samples involved in the study is too small to generalize its result to embrace a broadersituation.
2.the arguer fails to eliminate other factors that might make the first group recover sooner than the second. For eg, first groups men can be stronger or younger thant the second. sugarpills might cause side effect to postpone the 2nd group men to recover. As doctors are different, results can be different.
3.unless further study is conducted to prove the effect of antibiotics, the advice to use antibiotics to all patients are unsound.
RGUMENT52 - The following appeared in a memo to the human resources manager at Baobob Inc., a large architectural firm.
"Several well-known, retired architects were interviewed in Architecture Today about changes in the field. Only one had earned a college degree in architecture. All others had come into the field at an early age by serving apprenticeships that required them to work under the direct supervision of an experienced architect. Several of the colleges that we recruit from report that many promising architecture students leave school early in their undergraduate career. Therefore, because finding talented architecture graduates is becoming more difficult, Baobob Inc. should start an aggressive apprenticeship program and hire students who express an interest in architecture directly out of high school rather than wait for them to get out of college."
1.retired archetects are out of date, situations fit for them might be totaly different as time passed by.
2.only several retired archtects AND several colleges don't make sense for the common situation.
3.no proofs to indicate apprenticeship is superior to college education.
4.arguer fails to prove that Baobob company is troublesome to rescruit enough qualified graduates from college, therefore, there is a need for them to start apprenticeship program.
ISSUE34 - "Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines-that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences-colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society."
ISSUE35 - "No matter what the situation, it is more harmful to compromise one's beliefs than to adhere to them."
