Argument2:The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.

"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."

    In this letter, the author recommends that in order to raise values in Deerhaven Acres, a set of restrictions should be adopted on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. In order to support this argument, the author points out that Brookville adopted such restrictions seven years ago, and since then average property values have tripled in Brookville. However, this argument is flawed in several critical respects, which render it unconvincing as it stands.
    First of all, setting a set of restrictions doesn’t guarantee that the residents in Brookville will actually implement them. Maybe the most of homeowners in Brookville failed to carry out these restrictions. If so, the author cannot attribute the riase of Brookville’s property to these restrictions.
     Even assuming that most of Brookville’s homeowners indeed complied with these restrictions, the author’s conclusion relies on further assumption that it is this course of action that leaded to the raise of Brookville’s property values. However, the author provides no substantial evidence to bolster the assumption. It is entirely possible that one or more other factors were instead responsible for the increase. For example, maybe the welfare policy has been improved during last seven years, or the criminal rate has been decreased dramatically, or the economy in Brookville has been growing steadily. Without ruling out other possible explanations, the author cannot convince me that it is these restrictions that promoted Brookville’s property values.
     Even assuming that the restrictions adopted by Brookville increased its property values, the author’s recommendation still relies on another assumption that there’s no alternative means to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres. Perhaps Deerhaven Acres can increase its property values by enhancing the current welfare policy, or by reducing its criminal rate. Without considering and ruling out other alternative means of raising property values in Deerhaven Acres, the author cannot confidently conclude that Deerhaven Acres must adopt the restrictions on landscaping and housepainting in order to increase its property values.
    In conclusion, the argument suffers from a series of poor assumptions. To strengthen this argument, the author must provide clear evidence that the residents in Brookville has implemented these restrictions, and the restrictions were responsible for the increase of Brookville’s property values. The author must also provide evidence that adopting such restrictions is the only way to the raise of property values in Brookville.
