TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
WORDS: 470
Outline:
1. Research is also a kind of jobs. Their duty is making our society to be better
2. Interests play the important role in research
3. However, contributions is more important
I disagree with the author's perspective that we should not concern with scholars and researchers whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. Admittedly, individual interests are significant to gain a great achievement in academic. However, as the important role in advancing society, scholars and researchers should put their contributions in the first place, not their individual interests.
First of all, research is also a kind of jobs in our society, which help people solve some difficult problems. Whatever else may be said, most people will agree that the ultimate purpose of this job is making our society to be better. So the most important duty of scholars and researchers is make contributions to our society. On morality, if a teacher doesn’t put educating students as his primary work, he or she will undoubtedly be blamed. It is the same case to scholars and researchers. Moreover, scholars and researchers always get a high salary for their return to the society. It is unfair to others, if they just pursue their individual interests, because everyone has the right to pursue his or her individual interests.
Admittedly, individual interests are the greatly helpful factor to one's achievements, especially for scholars and researchers. Considering every successful case in science area. Interests play a very important role. Einstein lives a hard life in his early research time. He not only maintains a large family, but also has to tolerate others' doubt and misunderstanding about his scholar view. It is just the passion of pursuing the truths of science make him to insist his research, and eventually get a great achievement.
As the foregoing reason, I don't negative the importance of individual interests at all. However, comparing with the contributions to the society, pursuing interests is really a minor thing for scholars and researchers. First, interests, a tool which can help us to reach the ultimate purpose, should never be a ultimate pursuit. There is a saying that "The only time a person can feel happy is when his work gain others' positiveness". So what scholars and researchers should do is to make their interest cater their research work, not to blindly pursue their individual interests. Secondly, pursuing individual interests is not inconsistent with making contribution to the society. It is totally possible to make one's interests serves to his or her work. Even if they are inconsistent, Scholars and researchers can pursue their own interests as their individual behaviors, not as their daily work.
In sum, I think that making contributions to the society is more important than pursuing the individual interests, for scholars and researchers. It is undoubtedly that interests play a crucial role in the process of research. However, scholars and researchers should put their individual interests in a minor place. They should remember their ultimate duty when the two is inconsistent.
