This memo recommends substituting the Good-Taste with Discount Foods company to supply food in Cedar Corporation’s employee cafeteria next year . To support the recommendation, the author cites the fact that Good-Taste is the second most expensive caterer in the city and its fee is increasing and the fact that three employee complained to the author. Meanwhile the author provides some feature about the Discount Food. For several reasons, the evidence fail to provide adequate support for the recommendation.

Firstly, in order to improve employee satisfaction , the company supplying food should provide a high quality of food. Since Good-Taste is the second most expensive caterer in the city , it is possible that it offers more delicious food to employee and that means it will earn employee’s satisfaction more easily. The author also cites that Good-Taste keeps increasing its fee which will absolutely increase the cost of food service. However, high cost has nothing to do with the employee satisfaction .Even if it is the main factor that affects the decision of changing the caterer, there is still less information we know about the increasing of fee. It is possible that other caterer has the same situation with Good-Taste which is caused by decreasing of the whole country economy or deteriorating of the whole world economy. Without enough information, we cannot judge the Good-Taste simply basis on the fee aspect.

Secondly, the problem with the recommendation is that it relies partly on the fact that three Cendar employees find eating in the company cafeteria “unbearable”. Yet the author does not point out the reasons of the complaint. Common sense tell us that there is at least 100 staff eating in the caterer, which means three employees cannot stand the most opinion of employees. Besides , it is entirely possible that the environment of cafeteria is far away from the expectation of employees so that they would rather go out for dinner. If so, it just indicates that the employees care about the quality of meal than the price of meal and the company should focus on the improvement of environment of cafeteria instead of replacing the caterer. Or perhaps the three employees hate to take turns to have meals because the delicious food Good-Taste supplies draw outsiders’ attention and they all rush into this cafeteria to have their meals which means there are too many people during the dinner time. If so , the Cendar Company should establish related rules to restrict outsiders’ coming during the meal time and it also indicate the high quality of food Good-Taste provides.

Thirdly, even if it is the Good-Taste’s fault causing the decreasing of satisfaction of employees, the author does not provide enough information about Discount Foods to convince us that it is the  right caterer for Cendar. On one hand , Discount Foods is a family-owned local company which means it might not have formal regulations and the management of the company might be disordered and the health of food it supplies is highly doubted by us . On the other hand , the sample lunch tasted by the author is possibly well prepared by Discount Foods in order to draw the attention of their clients and the real meals they provide is not the same as the sample . Even if the meals they provide do taste good for the author , others such as the employees will not have the same feelings as the author did. Thus , the features of Discount Food still cannot convince us that Discount Food is better than Good-Taste.

Finally , the author cites that Good-Taste refuses to provide meals for special people which will decrease the satisfaction of employees . However , according to the memo we do not know whether Discount Food provide the special service or not .So we cannot judge and make the decision basis on this point.

In conclusion , the memo is unpersuasive as it stands . To strengthen this recommendation, the author needs to provide fees of other caterers comparing to Good-Taste and point out the real reason of complaint. The author should also provide more information about Discount Food and highlight the superior aspects of it comparing to Good-Taste.
