I do not agree with the claim that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society also some people find satisfaction in these inquiries. Addimittedly, many areas of mental inquiries are beyond the reach of science. However, it is dubious whether these nonmainstream inquiries other than art have positive effect on people and society.
Through the long human history, inquiries as astrology, fortune-telling and etc. were favored by people as they boasted of solving and answering what all human being were eager to know and could not make clear (in other words, satisfying human needs). With this feature, the nonmainstream inquiries became popular and had their stable role in society. Nevertheless, as human became more and more knowledgeable, we understood ourselves better and these onmainstream inquiries are deemed to decline as they were born a kind of deception. I admit that some people now are still have their commitment to these inquiries, but they are abviously the minor part of us.
Some who support the existence of inquiries as astrology might contend that these inquiries can satisfy the mental needs of some people although they are not quite reliable have contradiciton with modern science and human understanding. As a critical viewer of the whole society and the belief of human being, I have to respect those who have their belief in these nonmainstream areas of inquiry. This altitude, however, does not equal to the advocating these inquiries to the whole society. Closer scrutiny of these inquiries even will reveal a myriad of adverse effect on people. For example, the idea fortune-telling would never encourage people to try their effort. Instead, they would simply rely their future on some untenable fortune-tellers. Further, we also have the responsibility to guide the whole society to healthier areas of inquiry. For example, art forms as music and painting or healthy religious beliefs can serve as great mental relief to people.
By studying the science and philosophy, we will have the ideal that there exist areas that science cannot explain. Modern philosophy will also debate the ability of human beings to understand the universe the utimate principles. Even with this understanding of inherent limit of us, we do not have sound reasons to resort to astrology, fortune-telling or paranomal pursuits. I believe any one with the ability to think logically will deny the foundation of these nonmainstream areas. Any we can hardly see any positive effects on our technology, production and understand.
In sum, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry are more like the mental belief of some people now. But we should clearly see the negative effects of them. These inquiries become obsolete in our development as they are inherently untenable. With these understanding, I cannot agree that the nonmainstream inquiries play a vital role in society.
