TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
超时超级严重。。。大概一个多小时吧。。。直接关了AWP写的。。。--!!!
Though I agree with the notion that the history are made up by the famous few and the unknown public together, on the side of history-study side, I tend to say that the focus on individuals can be more effective. For the reason that the famous few are more representative and described in details which facilitate the study.
Admittedly, on the fact side, it is the public and only the public who can achieve the significant events and trends. Without the help of the public, the French Revolution is unable to success; leaving the leaders alone, the Russian October Revolution is doomed to fall; and the foundation of china is on the base of thousands of hundreds common people's sacrifice. No matter what type the revolution is or the resistance to aggression is, the opposition parts in the competitions are sure to try their best to defend for themselves in any method possible, especially the violence. In most time, the leaders are in charge of the planning, the directing while amass are responsible for attacking, taking exact actions. Without the public, the thought amouts(amount) to fantasy--no matter how reasonable it is. Thus, it is the unknown public who ensure the finally significant success by sacrificing their benefits, happiness or even their lives.
On the other hand, however, we have to offer the famous few enough attention while concerning the goal of studying history--the main objective we aim to get from the analysis is to know the true history itself. Even if the public identities are memorized, they may be useless for the study, as the simple information of names and backgrounds is irrelative to the events and trends; let alone the identities have long been forgotten. On the contrary, the respects of the special individuals (like the politicians) advance the study, which naturally absorb the emphasis on the famous few.
In the field of politics, the great politicicans(politician) are representative of the mind of public in their age. The successes of them preciously reflect the mainstream thoughts, the widespread politics desires and the courses of the significant events. For example, with the study of the famous speaking "I have a dream" by Martin Luther King, we can see the African American's struggle for rights; by analyzing what Gandi(Gandhi) did and advocated, it is easy to understand why the Indians keep irresistant to the violence. One more example is Hitler, whose striking speech directly mirrors the enthusiasm among the Germany. It is just the politicians, whose minds are widely accepted and advocated in their time, then could they call enough supports to attain their politician goals--no matter they are kind or devil. Without such necessary research on them, the simply analysis on the events or trends themselves is meaningless, just as we can never know what a monkey is considering when it is sitting alone. In other words, the method to realize the famous thoughts keeps the history study away from wasting time collecting unrepresentative metails(materials).
What is more, the biographys(biographies) ,letters and memoirs of the famous few serve to reconstruct the history as well. In most cases, the books are written by the famous themselves or by their friends, students or family members--who are seldom to lie. Accordingly, from the books the history show its real face to us, such as the background in which the decisions were made and the persons who ever nearly change the great mind. The results of events and trends pale in importance to the study compare to the information of the materials, which emphases the importance of the individuals again.
In sum, the role the famous few act in the significant events and trends make up the emphasis on the individuals but not the forgotten ones. And sometimes, the significant events are achieved by scientists along, like the discovery of gravity by Newton and the theory of relativity by Einstein, which need the only focus on the few merely.
