"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work
makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they
pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those
interests may seem."
1、scholars和researchers应该在做学问的同时时刻关心自己的成果对社会的影响乃至
贡献，如果对社会产生了积极的推动作用（比如一本关于贫困地区的著作让人们更加关
注贫困）那就继续保持，如果给社会带来了负面影响（比如克隆人引起了人们的恐慌）
那就应该考虑怎样解决科学与伦理的冲突。
2、自由追求interests是一个人毕生的梦想。对于自己interest的工作，他是快乐和满
足的，并且以最高的效率不知疲倦地达到目标。而做学问、搞研究需要的不仅仅是专业
的知识，更在于你有没有坚持、吃苦的态度，能乐观面对所遇到的困难并解决它。比如
霍金，即使在轮椅上，因为对天文物理的强烈兴趣，条件再困难他也不妨碍他走在世界
当今物理领域的前沿。
3、但不是每个人都能以自己感兴趣的方向作为职业并有所成就，这是因为家庭、经济，
还有可能是他的兴趣广泛，让他不得不选择其一作为职业等的原因。但不要放弃自己的
兴趣，在努力工作的同时也可以兼顾到自己的兴趣甚至可以把自己的兴趣与工作联系起
来。比如爱因斯坦的小提琴。


I strongly agree with that scholars and researchers quest for their
interests, even if the interests may seem unusual or idiosyncratic. However,
concerning their contributions to the lager society is the same significant
in my view.

To begin with, the contribution made by scholars and researchers not only
relates to themselves but also compacts on society. If their work benefits
the development of society and the spreading of civilization, their
contribution is positive. Nevertheless, intellectuals have the responsibility
to eliminte and avoid some negtive impacts or even terminate their study if
their work disturbs the balance. For example, Ye Nan, a graduate student in
Xiamen university of China, finished a book called "Holding the dream" which
was published last year. In this book, it describes the amazing and hardly
life in the west region of China as well as the supporting action as
volunteers. Thus more and more people paid special attention to the devepment
of the west region, especially the education of children, through this book-
-"Holding the dream". On the contrary, public would be frighten by the human
coloning which is considered disobeying ethic and the harmonious disappeared.
In short, study made by sholars and researchers should consider the influence
to the society, thus their contribution could be worthy.

Secondly, pursuing individual interests freely is a sweet dream in lifetime.
Usually, the inquiry and research are boring and time-consuming, thus high
passion, positive motivation and calmness when encountering obstacles is
needed in study. And people who are interested in their work can just come to
that standard. Furthermore, people also execl in the field in which they
interested. On balance interests help to make the study more effective,
meaningful and successful. For example, Stephen William Hawking, who is the
author of the best-selling book "A brief history of time", is honored as the
most famous scientific ideologist and the most outstanding academic pysical
scientist following Albert Einstein. However, it is amazing that Hawking has
been on the wheelchiar for more than 40 years and he is able to move nothing
but his three fingers due to a severe illness called "amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis". However, this fetal obstacle fails to break down him and now he
is still active in the field of physics. That is his dream, that is what he
is interested in.

However, it is impossible that everyong can pusure his or her interest and
makes it as work. Sometimes we have to make a choice between making a
contribution to society and pusuring interest. But it dose not mean that we
must abandon our interest. Albert Einstein honored as the fonder of
contemporary physics quested his interest--"physics" and regarded it as his
work almost through his lifetime. Yet he did not quit his other interest-
-"music". In his view, music and physical science both ingested nutrition
from common spring and enhanced each other, further he gained inspiration
from music sometimes.

To the sum, concerning contribution is the obligation of the scholar and
researcher, simultanetily, pursuing individual interests are their dream.
Make a favorable contribution and hold the dream, even the inquiry and
research disobeys their dream.
