In this argument, the author comes to the conclusion that increased level of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into late life. To support this point, the author cites that a group of 25 infants who showed sign of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli according to the first study, and that more than half of the children identified themselves as shy in light of the follow-up. However, the conclusion relies on a couple of specious assumptions, which rend unconvincing as it stands.
First and foremost, the author fails to lend strong support to the precondition that the function of melatonin has an enduring effect on the development of the infantile brain. As it speaks, the melatonin can exert effect on some brain function when their mother conceived them. However, it is entirely possible that since they were born the function of the hormone decrease so significantly that it can not serve to the development of brain. Consider the possible scenario, the precondition in fact is open to unconvincing.
Even assuming the reality of the precondition, the study is arbitrated as well. One the on hand, the so called mild distress does not parallel shyness, perhaps it might be a reflection of scare and tension. On the other hand, lack the standard of shyness we can not identify the frequency of shyness. It is normal to see that the young girl all too often is shy when she meets the handsome young man. So without ruling out and consider these factors, the study is dubitable.
Even assuming the reality of the study, there is no evidence to bolster the border conclusion that increased level of this hormone continues to cause shyness later the life. To the contrary, indeed common sense and experience tell us that through required exercise the shyness can be diminished dramatically. For instance, if a shy man speaks or make a speech in front of lot of people frequently and wittingly, then he will be free and brave as it turns out.
In sum up, the author fails to convince me the conclusion. To strengthen it the author should provide specific and scientific information about the study such the term of shyness, the statistical evidence, and so forth. To evaluate the author should pay more attention to other factors that might have effect on the reality of the conclusion.
