TOPIC: ARGUMENT170 - For the past five years, consumers in California have been willing to pay twice as much for oysters from the northeastern Atlantic Coast as for Gulf Coast oysters. This trend began shortly after harmful bacteria were found in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters. But scientists have now devised a process for killing the bacteria. Once consumers are made aware of the increased safety of Gulf Coast oysters, they are likely to be willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast as for northeastern Atlantic Coast oysters, and greater profits for Gulf Coast oyster producers will follow.

Starting with the phenomenon that once found harmful bacteria people began tend to buy Atlantic Coast(AC) oysters, the speaker says Gulf Coast(GC) will embrace new customs and get great profits as he know scientist have devised a process for killing the bacteria. However, two great doubtful facets can not let us agree with the speaker's view.

Just found bacteria in a few raw rather than live GC oysters, people tend to AC oysters and even rather like to pay twice as much as for GC. It indicated that people are so care about their health. Under this situation, just because scientists devise a process to kill the bacteria and have not clear it thoroughly, it is very hard to let people run out of that fear and persuade them to switch back. On the other hand, five years is a long time, and in this period maybe people have formed the habit to eat AC oysters and don’t want to change it. So even are aware of the safty, they may still buy the former one which they have habited.

If questions above existed, the profits are far from plan as the speaker thought. Even people received GC oysters, profits contain not only revenue but also cost. Maybe the invest for process to kill the bacteria is larger than the later money earned, there are also no profits to say.

So in order to know whether GC oysters will have more consumers and get larger profits, the speaker should be sure safty and suvey people's intention, knowing they are really not worried with this oysters and want to turn back to them. At the same time, the speaker also should be sure that its revenue indeed larger than the costs.
