TOPIC: ARGUMENT2 - The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."
The arguer presents that Brookville community's homeowners adopted some restrictions on the deployment style of their homes seven years ago. And since then, the average property price have tripled there. From this fact, the arguer made a conclusion that Deerhaven Acres should take the same action to promote their property values. After careful scrutiny, it is not difficult to pick some fatal fallacies from the arguer's discussion.
Firstly, whether the rise of property values in Deerhaven Acres is the result from those adopted restrictions is not clear. Given that the time span of the rise of property values their is seven years. In part time, many facors can influence the property price there. For instance, we can imagine that Brookville community has taken an big effort to improve their traffic condition. They could also spend a lot of money to improve the environment there. Through these actions, a soaring property price will not be queer for us to see. Despite traffic condition and enviromental improvement, there are a large bunch of things that can triple the price. Sololy make a artificial link between a set of restrictions and the rise of average property values there is not an effective reason.
Secondly, the arguer also failed to concern the geographical factors of Brookville community and Deerhaven Acres. If the geographical condition in Brookville community is much better than in Deerhaven Acres, the same kind of restrctions may not take effect in both the two different areas.
Thirdly, time factor has also not been concerned by the arguer. Given that homewoners near Brookville adopted these restrctions seven years ago. Through this seven-year-time the exterior condition of the two areas will be changed very much. So, it is highly likely that the same restrictions which are effective seven years ago will not take the same function now. In this case, taking the same kind of restrictions in Deerhaven Acres will be a foolish decision.
Given those fallacies presented above, the arguer failed to take concern a lot of factors that can make his conclusion unreasonable. So we can conclude that something more should be done and to think through in order to make a reasonable conclusion about the issue.
