% d. c4 f" \+ C1 Z% U, mAmherst is a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA. Amherst is need-blind for both domestic and international applicants and the college’s need-based financial aid packages are considered among the most generous in the United States. Amherst is a 90-minute drive from Boston and a three-hour drive from New York City. The college enrolls students from nearly every state in the United States and from 39 different countries around the world. Amherst students demonstrate a passion for learning along with a willingness to be involved in the world around them. With its dynamic, dedicated faculty, Amherst is a lively intellectual and diverse community in which students are active members. Small classes, experiential learning, research opportunities and a wide variety of extracurricular offerings provide multiple avenues of exploration. An open curriculum, with majors ranging from neuroscience to law, jurisprudence, and social thought, allows students substantial freedom to pursue their academic and pre-professional goals. Membership in the Five College Consortium provides students with additional course offerings and broader social and student organization networks.2 s  b, ^/ g$ \! X) P

/ X6 d0 b# M  a0 E" b" RI am travelling to China because Amherst is committed to recruiting a diverse population of students from all over the world. Currently at Amherst there are 130 international students representing 39 different countries. As part of our effort to recruit a broad range of students to the Amherst community, we believe that it is important for members of our Admission Committee to travel to various regions of the world so that we can increase our understanding of the academic and cultural environments from which our applicants hail. In addition, traveling outside the United States allows us to meet personally with students and families and answer questions they may have about Amherst and/or higher education in the United States.$ a. ~8 N& g+ B4 ]

2. What kinds of students are you looking for?) k0 D+ @1 E7 m0 l7 ~; _( ]

2 `- h. d& _' HOf course, Amherst is looking for applications from students who are intellectually curious and willing to work hard in an academically engaging environment. In the Amherst classroom, students will be challenged to question assumptions and put theory into practice. This means that it is important for us to look for these intellectual attributes in the applicants who apply to the college. However, Amherst is also one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the United States. As such, we must also look for applicants who have demonstrated an outstanding academic performance within their secondary school program and we strive to find academically talented students who also have engaged themselves in activities outside of the classroom in some significant way. / q; R0 u4 Z: \; J4 v1 u

3. What are some typical mistakes Chinese applicants make in their application?* S1 v. A2 f2 I/ [. o

6 R  X" V: e2 _: y: WChinese applicants sometimes send too many additional materials with their applications. At Amherst, we read approximately 8,000 applications each year. Application readers have less than 20 minutes to read all of the application materials provided by any one applicant. Although we do encourage students to submit formal supplements demonstrating talents in fine art, music, theatre, dance and athletics, we do not encourage students to send certificates of achievement or completion for every activity or academic program in which they have involved themselves. Often applicants cloud their application with extraneous materials that can distract the readers from the applicant’s true strengths. You might ask yourself, if I had only 20 minutes to read my application for the first time, what tangible academic strengths and talents would stand out to me? As an applicant, you need to make these things clear to the reader in an easy and concise way. In addition, applicants who do not take the time to review their essays will be at a disadvantage in the admission process. We pay close attention to the accuracy and style of every applicant’s writing. We are not expecting the exact same writing style from English speaking and non-English speaking students, but we do want to be sure that any student we admit to Amherst can engage in classroom conversations and written assignments at a very sophisticated level. The language and writing style expressed in an applicant’s essay is an important indicator of his or her potential for success at Amherst. ; Y" B3 f! y. `- u* F
