    Which is more important in human society? Paranormal pursuits or science technology? There has a lasting discussion about that. In my view, although the paranormal pursuits such as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic are nonmainstream areas, it also plays an important role by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

    To begin with, there are many problems that the mainstream science cannot explain and solve, which provide the space for the nonmainstream pursuits. There are many examples could illustrate this point. For instance, people used to observe the UFO for several times, but scientists could not explain that how can these flying objects across the extremely long distance between universe and earth. Also, there is a strange phenomenon in Taos, a city in Mexico. An amount of travelers could hear a strange sound while only two percents of the habitants could hear. Because scientists could not explain above phenomena, at least for the time being, people would study it in paranormal pursuits in order to find the answer. Furthermore, these nonmainstream pursuits might be the mainstream science in the future. Looking back in history, science often develops on the basic of the "heterodoxy". For example, Heliocentric Theory, raised by Copernicus, absolutely was a nonmainstream area, even defined as ”heterodoxy" in that period of time. However, along with the human cognition improved, it generally became mainstream science in the later ten decades. Therefore, these nonmainstream pursuits have its common values in the
development of human society.

    Admittedly, nonmainstream areas pursuits play an important role in human society. In one sense, these paranormal pursuits could satisfy the curiosities of human beings, who eagerly wonder their future. For instance, one parent went to an astrologer inquiring something about her child and the astrologer told that her child would be very smart and even play as an important role in the world. Thus this parent would extremely pleasant and assure their child’s success in the future. From this example, it tells us such paranormal pursuits satisfy human curiosity. In another sense, such paranormal pursuits provide hope and confidence for human beings. In ancient time, for example, the king would seek advices from fortune-tellers before he started a war or made a crucial decision, because they felt their competences facing those mortal problems such as war and no matter the predictions are normal or paranormal, they hope those predictions could strengthen the faith of them and at least their soldiers’ confidence. There were numerous examples in the history that the country which holds stronger faith won a victory over a war at last. Hence nonmainstream areas are essential for human society.

    However, these nonmainstream pursuits, in some extent, are harmful for the individuals. People might depend on these paranormal pursuits too much, which would convince people could attain the fortune and power, given by the God as a gift, without any work. For example, imaging that a teenager goes to a fortune-teller to request him whether he could be success in decades. Then the fortune-teller gives him a positive answer and the teenager firmly convinces that he would be success anyway without any striving. Apparently, this teenager could never succeed. Therefore such pursuits would gradually get people degenerate, who only have a daydream instead of undertaking, and ruin their future in the end.

    In conclusion, the paranormal pursuits such as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic are critical in human society, but public could not rely it on excessively. If so, these nonmainstream pursuits would have a negative influence to you.
