When it comes to a society’s ideas and values, the speaker asserts that people can judge it by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. I strongly disagree this conclusion but I take the fresh view to some extent for the claim that the way people look, dress and act reveal their attitudes and interests, as discussed below.
Admittedly, in some circumstance, the appearance of one person could show his interests. Providing the majority of academic professors in famous universities you met before, are they wearing unnoticeable clothes without combing when they enter the classroom? Or take a look at the artists. Are most of them clothed more or less distinct with other common people? And think about those photographers when you travel. Are they dressed a jacket with a large number of pockets? The chief reason of these people dressed specially is because either it could express their society status or it is comfort for their job that they are appealed to. For instance, professors would spend much time on studying in the campus so that they do not place much emphasis on their clothes. Also, a jacket with some pockets would supply more spaces where the photographers could put an amount of tapes and lenses which are necessary for them. Hence, regarding on some people’s appearance, generally speaking, could reflect their interests.
Other person, however, could not be evaluated by their dressed. For one thing, some people do not care their appearance and you might make a poor judgment of their attitude and interests through their clothes. To illustrate this point clearly, Socrates, a celebrated philosopher in ancient Greece, is an obvious example. Despite he was famous and appreciated by most people, he often ate poor food, dressed coarse clothes, and spelt on the ground, in avenues and even under the beam. For another thing, it is not available for some people to wear the clothes what they are interests in. In fact, employees must clothe the uniform in the enterprise and thus how can you determine what they are fond of. The same is true of students. Therefore, one’s attitudes and interests cannot be appraised only by his look, dress and act.
What is more, even assuming that people’s appearance and behavior could reflect their attitudes and interests, it is arbitrary to affirm that society’s beliefs and values could be judged by the appearance and behavior of its people. What is the most significant is we should aware of the definition of ideas and values of a society. In my view, society’s ideas and values are the commentary and comprehension of objections (includes person and issue) which are refereed by its people. From above definition, we could safely draw the conclusion that only public’s inside characters such as though and mind could demonstrate the beliefs and values of their society and thus this is nowhere more ridiculous than on the assertion that by observing the appearance and behaviors of the people we could know the society’s ideas and values.
In a word, while I acknowledge that sometimes one could evaluate people’s attitudes and interests by observing their appearance, one could never understand the society’s beliefs and values by doing this.
