Artists create works of art while critics evaluate them. Followed by this, artists may learn some evaluation from the critics and improve or add something novel to the following works. In this perspective, artists and critics are co-existent. As to lasting values and the recipient—society, with due respect to critics I hold the opinion that works of art produced by artists can last permanently for society.
Critics, of course, have values themselves and toward art field, but these values are not lasting. Any completion of an art production, will inevitably stirred critics’ remarks. It is their job or duty to give assessment or statement, with two opposite results, valued or less-valued. These judgments, may be useful to spread and popularize the piece of art, may be meaningful for the artist and other artists concerned about their future piece, however, can not stand long compared to those works of art based on two reasons. For one thing, works of art, like music or painting, are impressive owing to its novelty, creativity and sympathy. Audience can not help bearing them in mind regardless of times; for another thing, works of art are recorded systematically in the museums or galleries, or themselves are a record, such as the Opera House or the Pizza Tower. Hence it enables increasing people to have access to them and feel aesthetic touches. There is another consideration which should be taken into, that is, works of art are sometimes leading the fashion thus beyond populace’s comprehension. In this case, it may take years or centuries for people in society to discover its beauty and value, which also proves its longevity already.
Similarly, the direct objectives of critics are artists while the aimed group of artists is the whole society. Critics rely on works of art to give their comments, which is like a professional response to artists. Their comments may be emphasized by the certain artists. Those cherished comments may later be integrated into artists’ subsequent creation. To this end, critics and artists get a double-win satisfaction and somewhat co-existing, however, this interaction has little direct influence on society. While artists, with their upspring works, give people comfort, ease, sympathy and other spiritual enjoyment. They meet people’s emotional ends by striving. It is said that art is based on people’s life but above it. Actually, some successful artists attach great importance to the degree of “above” by recognizing their aimed objectives—society. One of the noted examples is Chinese Poet, Li Bai in Tang Dynasty, who once asked some peasants or illiteracy housewives to re-edit his poems, in order to get wider popularity and common empathy. Undoubtedly, this kind of conscious effort gain wide recognition and success.
All in all, critics have, admittedly, contributions to evaluating works of art, spreading them indirectly as well as facilitating improving artists’ prosperous pieces of art. These values of contributions, however, fail to be parallel to artists and their works, when target objectives and time duration are concerned. It is the works of art that give us eternal valuable aesthetic enjoyment. |
