TOPIC: ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

The author, in the argument, recommends that Omega University should stop student from evaluating their professors, in order to enable its graduates to secure better jobs. To support this proposal, the arguer cites a factual phenomenon that since the implementation of student evaluation, overall student grade averages have risen by thirty percent. Besides this, the author also mentions the apparent belief of potential employers that the grades at Omega are inflated. In addition, the arguer also compares the job-seeking success of graduates in Omega with that of graduates in Alpha. After a careful examination, the presumed recommendation is groundless and unwarranted.

First of all, implementing student evaluation can not be proven to cause the rising grade averages at Omega. The former just happed before the latter, and this subsequence can not represent the necessary relations, let alone the cause-and-effect relation.

Secondly, the belief of potential employers may attribute to their decision on whether enrolling graduates of Omega or not, but this should not be the only decisive reason. Rather than this, potential employers tend to take many factors into consideration, including "fit-in" abilities, correspondent majors, position requirements and so forth. Thus, the analogy between graduates from Omega and Alpha is incomplete and thus inexact. The graduates in Omega have not been so successful in getting jobs as Alpha graduates, due to many reasons, and the belief may be or not one of them.

Thirdly, the action of terminating student evaluation of professors can not guarantee its graduates to get jobs, needless to say secure better jobs. Like mentioned above, potential employers consider more factors besides grades, correspondingly, Omega University needs to help its students and get ready before job seeking. To secure better jobs needs more competent qualifications and corresponding skills, which is much more demanding for both Omega and its students.

On the whole, the assumed suggestion in this argument is not persuasive but problematic. To make it logically convincing, the author should point out the cause-and-effect relations between the procedure of student evaluation and rising average scores of students. More importantly, the arguer should dig out the real reason of differences in job finding of graduates at Omega and Alpha and make suitable adjustments of Omega to getting its students ready, instead of merely terminating student evaluation of professors.
