The study of history indeed breaks down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other history. However, the benefit of the study of history goes beyond this narrow goal. The cognition of people and societies brought by studying the past has a more significant merit than only breaking down this illusion.

Admittedly, by studying the past we realize that the condition we are in and the situation we face today are not significantly different from our ancestors. Though we have what they didn’t have in the past, their problems are still with us just changing from one form to another. Facing the Internet which has an explosion of information, we still feel having a blank spiritual head just like those who didn’t have book to read and who know nothing about the outside world because there was no Internet in the past. Though we have an advanced biotechnology, there are still a lot of people suffering from starvation in third country just like what people had faced before no one had invented the hybridization technique. Though we have advanced techniques to alarm natural disasters, the natural disasters such as the powerful earthquake in China and the hurricane in American last year also devitalize many people’s lives. Now we even face the same situation and have the same horrified feelings as those people who experienced the great plague in London. By studying of history, we realize that we are not different from people in the past. History contains what we are and will be, helping us to understand what we have to face today has probably, in some form or fashion, been faced before.

However, the benefit of studying history goes beyond this narrow cognition. Realizing that what we have to face today may have been faced before is just a middle process of a deeper understanding. History makes us understand what we are and how our society forms. Those most significant people and changes are not only dates or names upon the page. History is not dry facts. Historical stories give us a vivid understanding of industrial revolution, the invention of steamer, and the successes of the Wright Brothers. Those histories make us understand how the techniques we have today come from. And by comparing to the technology development in the past, we can even prospect what we will have in the future. History also makes us aware of ourselves and the world around us, enabling us to accept what are sometimes difficult and painful truths. We are facing a hard economic crisis now, but the same situation had also happened in 1929, and we already have overcome it. History gives us confidence to overcome the difficulties and obstacles which we face today. History also makes us aware what is wrong and what is infeasible today, it gives us vivid lessons in order to prevent us from committing them again. However, sometimes we still fall down in the same place. We have been shocked by the Pearl Harbor and the same feeling also comes to us in September 11. We have suffered from the first and second world war, but we still have wars in Balkans and the Middle East. History gives us lessons about the bad consequences of war while our greedy and violence still make us ignore these lessons.

To sum up, history is important to us and to our society, we cannot forget the facts that we are history and our lives are raw materials for future historians. By studying history, we not only realize that people in different times are actually not significant different, but also realize that history provides a lot evidence for us to understand ourselves and to make us have a better understanding of what we are and what we will be.
