TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

The truly merit of education does not lie in its special design to meet each student's needs and interests but in the cultivation of the students' ability which can help students find their goals and then realize these goals.
Education, as an important method of government to educate one by one generation, is designed to fit for the mass, not the individual. Thus it is unnecessary and infeasible for education to meet each student's needs. The reasons why I assert this opinion are as follows:
First, the real merit of education can support my view that it is unnecessary to meet each student's needs and interests. As we all know, the goal of education is to cultivate a competent, open-minded and independent student. What education can teach is the basic knowledge to build the foundation of one’s skill. Every student has the same opportunity in front of education. The differences between various students are their own mental level and the passion to pursue knowledge and make improvement. The function of education is to guide students to find their advantages and to educe students to dig out their potential. To the mass, the way to educate them is the same, what is different is their own efforts, thus it is unnecessary to make special design of education in order to meet everyone's needs.
Secondly, because of the limitation of educational resources, it is infeasible for us to make special designs to meet every student's needs. There are so many students here that only extraordinary efforts and plenty of money can realize this requirement. Besides, when there are still a lot of children who are not able to go to school, this decision that education should be designed for each student seems not only unfair but also even wasteful. It is better to complete the current education system and make sure that every student will have the some opportunity to go to school rather than to make special design for only those who can afford education.
Accordingly, because of the misunderstanding of the education's merit, the speaker commits an improper statement.
However, when it comes to the students' interests, the speaker correctly pays enough attention to it. Admittedly, interest plays an important role in students' development. The students who are interested in particular subjects all decide to devote more energy to this area and they also make a practicable plan. It is undoubted that their interests can give them power to insist on their plan and make progress in the end.
But, since the current education mechanically imbues students’ mind with a lot of knowledge, students have already lost their ability to think on their own. And there is also a problem involving with the students’ interests of study. Those subjects which can't attract their interests are shunned out of the door whereas those they really interest are considered to be worthwhile. I must concede that interests indeed can help student get success in certain subject; yet, the incomplete development of students can result in an incomplete society. Thus, if we accept the speaker’s statement that education is truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet for each student, this incomplete phenomenon may become worse.
To sum up, the true merit of education is to guide students to improve their ability and find their own goals. They must meet their own needs and interests, making use of the knowledge taught in school, rather than waiting for education to realize their goals. |
