Scientific production and technological advancement bring about so many conveniences to our contemporary life that we could not live without them. Reflecting on the relationship between human and scientific development, it is obvious that every scientific research and development aim to improve our living condition whereas it is our abusive use of technology make us in trouble. Thus, I think the government should not place restriction on scientific research and development, more than that, it should support these researches. In contrast to this attitude to scientific research, government should pay more attention or even place restrictions on applications of these research.
Looking back at the development of technology, both those which pursue short-term profit and those which obey natural rules or seek long-time profits all benefit people a lot. We cannot neglect their contributions. How would our contemporary life be if we restrict those researches? Maybe government will consider Internet as a threat to its dominion since it is hard to control the information’s spread. Thus we won’t have this useful tool. Or maybe government accepts the opinion of animal protection that using animals to make experiments is cruel and restricts those researches. Then there won’t be vaccines to treat terrible illness. And even those most controversial researches also aim to benefit human. Researches on cloning human embryo also have a good purpose to medical use. Obviously, if government places restrictions on scientific researches and development, it will be a great lose for our human.
However, the real problem of technology doesn’t lie in technology itself, but in our human.
We use the productions of scientific research without thinking of their bad consequences. Thus, many severe problems brought by abusing technology came out. At first glance, the productions of scientific researches benefit us a lot, and their advantages will outweighed its harms, or they even have no harms. However, the problems caused by these developments are often invisible in short time. Take Aswan Dam for example. At first, it helped people a lot by generating electricity, providing water for agriculture and preventing the flooding of Nile River. But as time goes on, many serious problems such as environmental issues and infectious disease also came out. And many other technological productions have the same negative influences as well, especially those involving environment. And another example, cloning represents the highest level of biology, but the abuse that to use this technique to clone human will put us in a worldwide panic.
These controversial problems will cause instability to our society. It is undoubted that we must depend on the strong penalty of our government to solve these problems. Only individuals or some organizations have no ability to reverse this situation. For example, government put restrictions on the productions of refrigerators containing fluorine, helping a lot to improve the quality of atmosphere. And conducting laws to restrict the exhaust gas released by cars or chemical industries indeed help solving some of our environmental problems.
In conclusion, the one our government should place restrictions on is not scientific research, but our application of it. Many problems are caused by our abusive use of technology, thus it is better to restrict the abuse of our human rather than the development of technology. |
