Introduction of My Background
I am a graduate student from Zhejiang Normal University (ZJNU). My major is Curriculum and Instruction (English Education). I have just got my M.Ed degree in June 22, 2009. I also took my undergraduate program, majoring in English, in the same university, receiving my BA degree in June, 2007.
During the six year study in English and Education, I have established a solid academic background in foreign languages, basic educational theories and philosophies. I have paid much more attention to develop my own ability of independent learning and research in my past years of study.
Why pursue a new degree in the U.S.?
Children’s second language development is my research interest during my graduate program. I did several internships and family tutors for teaching Chinese children English. Through those experiences I realize that effective teaching only happens when you have a thoughtful understanding of your students. However my degree in ZJNU focuses more on curriculum design and teaching strategies. After I research the learning resources about child development, I find most of them are translated from the U.S., including textbooks for majored students. The US is leading the way in this field, while China is in the process of paying more and more attention on this field, but still undeveloped. I think this new degree will give me a more comprehensive grasp of how to be a good teacher for pre-K2 children, and benefit my future career development in China.
Why Master, not Ph. D?
I want to be a front teacher in kindergarten after coming back, instead of a researcher in lab, or an educator in colleges. I think a master’s degree will offer me more practical and applied knowledge.
Why F2 to F1?
My F2 identity was just used this winter for me to visit my husband. I've been planned to go to the US for further education during my graduate study in last two years. I have been interested in early childhood education for long. However, in China this field is not very developed, only few schools have higher education programs on it. Although I've been teaching pre-K2 children for some time, I think I need more expertise from a specific program on it. From many publications I knew that the US is more developed in this field. This winter I visited several universities in Boston and got more determined on my plan. Tufts University is famous for its psychological research and this is very important for early childhood education. So compared with F2 that stays at home and cook for my husband, I'd rather go to school to learn something, so that we've got better opportunities after coming back to China.
Why Tufts?
After visiting several universities in Boston this winter, Tufts impressed me most for the following reasons:
Firstly, the Child Development Department of Tufts owns strong teaching resources like faculty, a children school, and a curriculum lab, through which I believe I can gain more knowledge and practical teaching experience to enhance my own competitive ability. Second, Tufts University ranks top 30 in the all U.S. institutions. The Child Development department of Tufts also enjoys a high reputation in the U.S. Boston, the most historical city in the U.S., This endows the university a strong cultural atmosphere, which will help my study. Moreover, Tufts is only two stations away from Harvard by subway, which enables me to live with my husband conveniently. According to the suggestion of my tutor, professors in ZJNU and my family, I decided to pursue Master degree in the field of Child Development at Tufts University.

Career Objective
What I will learn in this program can provide me with a solid background in jobs and professions. China’s early childhood education calls for professions in this field. Most kindergarten teachers in China do not really understand children. They copy American teaching style like classroom settings or games, but they lost the spirit of educational philosophies – try to listen to children’s heart, to satisfy children’s needs rather than asking children to fulfill adults’ needs. I hope my knowledge of children and education would benefit my future students. I hope less and less Chinese children would become a learning machine. I hope more and more parents and teachers would be more aware of children’s individual differences and multi-intelligence. Don’t push children, leave them a happy childhood. By broad knowledge and firm foundation in early childhood education of Tufts Master’s program, I am confident that I will accomplish this achievement in the near future and I will be a much more effective kindergarten teacher in China.
