TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

Grounded on a survey that women experience less pain and the easing of pain lasts longer whereas men suffer more but the painful feeling lasts shorter after using the same dosage of kappa opioids for their extraction of wisdom teeth, the author concludes that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever medication is required while men try other pain medications and the effects of medications should be reevaluated. With close scrutiny, I find that the argument suffers several flaws, rendering itself unconvincing to me.
To begin with, the arguer overlooks other possible differences between men and women that can also explain the different feelings. Men and women are not the same originally(originally different 我觉得更好) in many respects. It is also possible that women's wisdom teeth are less firmly planted than men's due to the different conditions of muscles. Or perhaps, the sensitivity of men and women to feel the severity of pain is different. That is to say, maybe men are more sensitive to the painful experience. Moreover, since the consequences are reported by the patients themselves, whether the reports are their real feelings is to be verified. Maybe women and men are all experiencing significant easing of pain, while men are more expertise on sensing the level of pain so that they could provide the more precise statistics than women.

Secondly, the author fails to point out that other medications have a similar effect as kappa opioids on men and women. It's true that, even if the kappa opioids have such different influences on men and women, the effects of other medications can not be indicated. Perhaps the kappa opoids is the most effective medicine, and then the conclusion that men should be given other kinds of pain medication turns out to be unwarranted. It is also probable that other medications cause a completely different effect, making women suffer more and the easing of pain last less time.
What's more, even though(if吧,这是假设而已) men and women differ in their feelings, there is yet no need for researchers to reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women. On the one hand, the difference in their feelings can be extremely slight so that the general effect of any certain medication is same on men and women. On the other hand, there is not any necessity to evaluate any medication whose function is not to reduce the painful feelings, since there's no evidence to show that men and women also have different feelings in medications of other diseases.
In addition, the survey mentioned in the argument only conducted among 28 men and 20 women. The number of people is limited, which leads to the conclusion unconvincing.
怎么unconvincing?稍为论证一下那28+20人可能有的特殊性吧
To sum up, the author makes the conclusions by citing a misleading and uninstructive survey. To bolster the idea, more volunteers should be invited in the survey and more medications should be tried including kappa opoids. And to better assess the argument, I would need more information about some other medications which mainly focus on erasing pain.
点评:总体写得不错,逻辑漏洞找准了,论证也比较充分,是一篇不错的argument. |
