144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Retrospect to the course of history, we feel grateful to find that there exists abundant works of art which are of great value to society. However, we seldom think of the critics who also play an indispensable role in the process of creating the value of the works of arts.
In the first place, we should identify what exactly the art is? Can the artistic creation be regarded as art? Or can one single work of art be reckoned as art? Neither. In my point of view, it is only when the artistic work combined with the process of creation, and the appreciation of the it together can we call it “art”. But when it comes to the value of the art, can we just simply equate the market price with the value of the work of art? Actually, market price is relevant to the value of art, but it cannot stand for the true value of art. Hypothetically, if a painting was believed to be the work of Da Vinci while several years later people discover that the painter is someone else, then its market price would slum from hundreds of thousands of dollars to a dozen dollars. However, to the real aesthetic critics, they would probably hold that someone who was equally as excellent as Da Vinci at that time but was ignored. This painting was still invaluable to the ones created by Da Vinci. Here, we may understand that the true value of art cannot be converted to the market price. The true value rests in everyone’s own taste. What is meant by this is that a highly spoken work of art by one could mean garbage to another.
With regard to what has mentioned above we seems to be confused again. Why did parts of the numerous works pass from generations to generations and become imperishable while others faded in the long course of history?

To answer this question, I would first give a classification of the works of art. The first type I would label it with "Contemporarily acceptable", which means that those works win their popularities in their own era. Examine many of such works, like the plays of William Shakespeare, the paintings of Claud Monet, and so forth, share something in common, which is that they win the acknowledgment of the folk mass in their time fortunately. Such works are mostly likely to be handed down to descendents. In this aspect, the artists as well as the fold mass work together to give ever-lasting value to society. MeiLanfang (the Chinese Peking Opera artist) who was not only adored by Chinese people, but also brought such artistic form to the outside world is a vivid example. Despite some critique, it was MeiLanfang who managed to astound foreigners with Chinese culture. Just as what I have believed before, it is very possible that those works which are accepted by their era would have a better chance to be remembered eternally whether they were criticized or not at that time.
On the contrary, another type of the works is "Contemporarily unacceptable". Unlike the former type, works belonged to this type are rather unfortunately to be harshly criticized or even forgotten by their contemporaries. Such consequence can be ascribed to several reasons; but among them one is standing out that it is because of the difficulty to comprehend such works at that time that make these works to be reckoned as unacceptable. I would raise Rembrandt, one of the greatest painters in 17th centuries, for instance. It was not until more than one hundred years after his death that Holland was surprisingly to discover that many famous painters regarded themselves as enthusiasts of Rembrandt and many critics spoke highly of his works. Sadly, the painter was once laughed at by the whole country and buried as a beggar. From my point of view, such works need subsequent critics to excavate their value; otherwise those gorgeous works would suffer permanently forgotten fate.
The value of art has little to do with the market price; instead, it rests on everyone’s own taste. If, fortunately, accepted by the folk mass, it is very likely that they would give perpetual value to society. If not, on no account should we afford to neglect the crucial role critic plays in the field for the reason that they have the ability to discover the value.
