TOPIC: ISSUE25 - "Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction-in other words, to make things as simple as possible."
WORDS: 534 (547)         TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2009-8-16 10:21:29
1.        人的本性将事物简单化。(daily lives: efficient)
2.        人对事物的认知过程是从复杂到简单再到复杂……的循环过程。看上去再简单的事物都有值得研究的价值。(Da Vinci画鸡蛋)
3.        有些时候简单化了反而会出乱子。(NASA, accountant)
People having been always seeking for a perfect way to deal with the things they encounter. It is human nature to simplify things, which is effective most of the time; however, there is no a fixed model.

Admittedly, it is necessary to simplify things even though they are not that plain. Especially in our daily lives, we want to be more effective and efficient; as a result we find the most crucial parts out and concentrate on the few issues. Such simplifying process can, to a large extent, save our time and energy, and thus we could focus on other issues. We make the washing machine so that we do not need to do the laundry by our own hands; we invented the mobile phones so that we do not need to wait days and nights and even months to hear our parents' voice; we create the Internet so that people can now enjoying sitting in front of the screen, clicking the mouse and waiting for the goods they have purchased to be delivered to their own places. Our keen desire to simplify the things serves to push the world move forward.

Digging into the process of our learning and recognizing things, we would discover that most of the time, different people's view on disparate things share something in common: from the very beginning, they have so little ideas of the new issue that they regard it as obscure and complex; when they spend some time doing researches on it, they may probably find some rules and begin to take it as a piece of cake; whereas, as they go further, they are startled to find that they should not have been that happy for the project is not that easy as they imagine. In reality, there are many factors they failed to consider before; so they do more researches--this is a cyclic process. In other words, whether things are simple or not depends on the degree that people master it. Even a seemingly easy and tiny thing deserves to be explored for the reason that after the research, people may find a new world. Take a vivid example. Da Vinci was made to draw the most "simple" eggs when he started to learn to paint. He was confused about the order made by his teacher at first. The wise teacher told him that the egg seems rather simple, but the lines and the shadow of every egg were different. The teacher was brilliant; she established the foundation of painting of Da Vinci. Indeed, only when one manages to draw an egg well enough can one accomplish other senior tasks. In this sense, even if facing a "simple" task, we should not take it too careless.

Furthermore, sometimes excessively simplify would trigger mistakes and even tragedies. If driven by the "simplify" nature, the researchers in NASA dare to ignore some minor problems on the satellites or rockets, the astronauts could face huge disasters and even their lives would be threatened. If an accountant dare to neglect some seemingly "useless" data, the overall budget would not be in balance.

In sum, to make things simple is the natural wish of human beings. But simplify is conditional: not all the time could people afford to make things simple; otherwise, it would lead mistakes.

TOPIC: ISSUE190 - "As long as people in a society are hungry or out of work or lack the basic skills needed to survive, the use of public resources to support the arts is inappropriate-and, perhaps, even cruel-when one considers all the potential uses of such money."
WORDS: 531(570)          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2009-8-15 14:30:50

Retrospect to history, we discover that dazzling works of art were made of those poor artists who could not get acknowledge in their own era. Indeed, some of us never stop their steps of pursuing art, regardless whether they were clothed or fed. Art is born with the civilization; any society should not leave it out.

Admittedly, for the majority of common people, art seems to be the garden high in the sky. Sometimes, they would probably look up and appreciate the value and beauty of the garden while in most of the time, they just look down to earth, concerning about whether they would be fired by their employers, or what university their children can go to due to the soaring tuition, or how to survive the chilly winter without adequate food and wood. If the government could not handle the urgent problems among mass people, we have reason to doubt whether this government has the ability to deal all the other issues of the nation. In this sense, if the government still spares some amount of money to arts, it is likely that the government would get protest from the common people.

A society, however, without arts, is just like a person without mind. Not all people are caring much about their material lives; instead, they look for the tranquility in the mind. Rembrandt, the famous painter of Holland, was living under the jeer of the whole city all his life and was buried like a beggar. Whereas, all of these could not prevent him from becoming a great artist.(word里是绿线~) One hundred years later after his death, Holland was startled to find that many painters regarded themselves as disciples of Rembrandt. Usually, the power of art last much longer than that of physical materials. Without art, people have no mentally pursuits. What they have in mind is just how to make more money, how to be appreciated by their bosses, and so forth. We can scarcely imagine what the society would be if such scenario came true. There is likelihood that human beings would become depraved to the class of animal except that they can use more tools and they have higher intelligence. We cannot help asking what the point is to live in such society.

Actually, arts should go hand in hand with the development of material lives. Any society, whether it is a well-developed or a developing one or a poverty-stricken area, could not afford to neglect arts. Just turn to North Korea (DPRK) for a glance. It is well known that its people are fighting with the famine and diseases. Frequent energy failure is part of their lives; even a mild eye ailment could not be cured in their best hospital; markets are so controlled by the government that everyone's meal is limited. Even under such circumstances, the passions for art of people of DPRK never vanish. On their national day, 100 thousand young people would gather and fulfill the group dancing together, which is also the dance with most people in the Guinness Record. People in DPRK are optimistic with the roads unfold before them despite all the hardships they are and will be faced with. Undoubtedly, arts play a crucial role in their optimism.

Anyway, if a society is far from plenty and developed, it is reasonable for it to spend less on the arts. Nevertheless, art is never dispensable in any society.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT190 - The following is a letter to the editor of the Glenville Gazette, a local newspaper.

"Over the past few years, the number of people who have purchased advance tickets for the Glenville Summer Concert series has declined, indicating lack of community support. Although the weather has been unpredictable in the past few years, this cannot be the reason for the decline in advance ticket purchases, because many people attended the concerts even in bad weather. Clearly, then, the reason for the decline is the choice of music, so the organizers of the concert should feature more modern music in the future and should be sure to include music composed by Richerts, whose recordings Glenville residents purchase more often than any other contemporary recordings. This strategy will undoubtedly increase advance ticket purchases and will increase attendance at the concerts."
WORDS: 307          TIME: 00:35:00          DATE: 2009-8-16 15:53:17

In expectation to attract more audiences to Glenville Summer Concerts, modern music and works of Recherts are suggested to be brought in, based on the arguer's conjecture that the declined popularity of concerts is not due to weather conditions. Good intent as arguer possesses, the reasoning progress suffers serious fallacies which have significantly weakened the suggestion.

The arguer, at the beginning, fails to substantialte the premise that tickets purchase has declined and thus some strategies are needed to increase it. Advance ticket is not necessarily connected with the whole tickets sold. For people who what to enjoy Glenville Simmer Concert series can buy entrance tickets after they arrive the concert rather than buy them advance. It is a reasonable possibility that though few advance tickets are sold at first, but most are sold out soon just when concerts are about to begin. Without providing actual number of attendance, it is not convincing to indicate that the support for community has declined.

Even if there are indeed fewer people who go to the summer concert, possible reasons can not exclude weather condition. Though, according to arguer, many people attended the concerts in bad weather years ago, no evidence shows there are still so many people are willing to bear bad weathers. Since people in few years ago can be well prepared for bad weather like rainy or windy days by bring umbrellas with them or wear thicker overcoats, they are free to care less about weather conditions. However, as the arguer mentions, weather becomes hardly predictable. Even if people yearn to enjoy concerts, they have no idea what the weather might give them. Perhaps after one or two times of unexpected getting soaked experiences, people are afraid to feel embarrassed again. In this case, weather can still be a reason for the declined audiences.

To attract people to come back to concerts, trying to meet their taste is reasonable, but the arguer can not attribute the reason to choice music and focusing on Richerts's recordings can be absurd as not credible information can indicate people are fond of this musician's work. Music styles are various, from Baroque style to Classic, from Romantic music to modern style. It is harsh to conclude that people must be fond of modern music. In addition, though people who buy Richerts's recordings more often than any other contemporary recordings for sure, it still remains unknown its percentage compared with classic recordings. Perhaps people buy much more other recordings composed buy classic musicians and among which, Rechert is not a popular one. As a result, the popularity of concerts is still not promising.

Without investigating the actual attendance of the concerts, the whole strategy is not necessary but a wasting of time and money. To support the argument, more information about real reasons about the declining audiences (if there has been one) should be offered. The taste of potential andiences is also needed to found out to perfect the strategy.

(还有一点我想到的是~即使这帮人喜欢现代音乐了~即使他们喜欢那人了~都买了CD了~有可能就不去听演唱会了~ 然后找找为啥人少了~有可能是concert质量不不行了~)

TOPIC: ISSUE180 - "Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated."
WORDS: 568 (574)
TIME: 00:45:00
DATE: 2009-8-16 20:02:04

As the product of modern society, laws serve to stabilize the new world. In the progress of social development, instead of stimulating the course of modernization, morality sometimes can even impede the wheels of the society.

So deeply are some of the ethics rooted in people' mind that some of us may not even realize their negative sides to the society. In the moral system, especially in the old days, people valued the behavior that taking the money from the wealthy and funding the poor. In the value system, people usually regard being wealthy as a sin no matter how they get the money. Consequently, they feel that it is not only right but also fair to take the money from the abundant to the needed. Robin Hood, the prince of thieves who robs the rich and gives to the poor, is still adored by present-day people. Actually, such behavior is nothing but illicit and should be faced the legal punishment. The possession of the individuals is protected by the law. Laws guard the privacy, which is a sign of the modern society. Take another vivid example. In the past, women were always reckoned as the stooge of the men. In China, women should abide by many regulations: in their childhood, they obeyed their father; after marriage, they were controlled by their husbands; getting old, they listened to their sons who had the right to vote. Any female who dared to break such rules would be reproached by the whole society. Today, such notorious moral regulations are still believed by some people. Thanks to the laws, women's rights can be protected: now there are equal, free, and deserve to fulfill their full measure of happiness.

Sometimes, some behaviors that are not advocated by the moral systems are protected by the laws. Nowadays, divorce rates have soared due to the fact that divorce is legal in the laws. In most people's mind, divorce, for sure, is depravation on the morality, which means that the couple could not keep their vows in the wedding and be loyal to their partners anymore. However, the legalizing of divorce proclaims that all people have the right to pursue freedom, which is also an inevitable element of the modern society.

More importantly, ethics need complement by the laws. Many ideas and values do not exist in the traditional value system. Without some environment protection laws, how many of us can honestly say that polluting the environment is a wrong behavior. Being affected by the laws, people gradually form the concept that human beings should go hand in hand with the environment.

Indeed, no laws are perfect enough. Our actions should also be refrained by the ethics. More importantly, some of the values upon which our society rests would not change in the modern society. Those things--hope and persistence, brevity and fair play, patriotism and hard working --are old, which still work for the modern society. Without ethic consciousness, people may not feel contrived even conducting something that is morally wrong, like betraying one’s lover.

Our world is moving forward, so does the legal system. Laws have undergone great changes and improvement so as to suit the development of the modern society. The variation of ethics, on the contrary, cannot be so rapid. Though laws should by replenished be morality, some inappropriate elements that are still rooted inside the moral system are waiting to be corrected by the laws.

In the first place, we should identify what exactly the art is? Can the artistic creation be regarded as art? Or can one single work of art be reckoned as art? Neither. In my point of view, it is only when the artistic work combined with the process of creation, and the appreciation of the it together can we call it “art”.
