“The study of history hasvalue only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives”
3.Besides,学习历史也会是cultivate our own cultural identity.
Whatis the value of studying history? Some argue that the study of history is onlyvaluable if it is relevant to our daily lives. However, beyond human beings’day-to-day activities, the study of history is also valuable.
Admittedly, most people find learning history valuable because history is a great source ofguidance and inspiration for our daily lives. The distinguished figures in thehistory, who achieved great success through real complexities and difficulties, set vivid examples we need in our daily lives. For instance, the notable Germancomposer Beethoven, whose loss of heary didn't prevent him from composing hiswell-known Ninth Synphony, will largely encourage people to overcome anydifficulties. Another example, Mother Teresa, the winner of the Nobel PeacePrize, may inspire us being kind and give a helping hand to the needed bylearning Her devotion to the poor people in India. To some extent, it is bystudying the history that we gain courage, persistence, goodness and other goodcharacters that we are longing for, which will guide us in all aspects in ourdaily life. From this point of view, studying history surely has value when itis relevant to our daily lives.
However, from abroader view, sometimes studying history may not directly associate with ourdaily lives. From the perspective of the society as a whole, indeed, the studyof history can help us avoid repeating mistakes and thus improve thedevelopment of society. Take the Nazi’s human experimentations as an example. Duringthe World War II, the German Nazi doctors performed a series horrifying medicalexperiments on large numbers of presoners. By learning the lessons from suchnotorious crimes, the Nuremberg Code of medical ethics was developed. Certainlythe ten principles in this code does not relate to our every life directly, yetthey undoubtedly protect the population against unhuman experimentations. Withoutthese efforts, we may still suffer crimes against humanity. Studying history,in this perspective, present even better value than just inspirating andguiding individuals.
In addition, the study of history can help us cultivate our own cultural identity. Bylearning about the history, we are really learing ourselves. From the history,we learn how our culture has been transmitted from one generation to another, and thus know more about the culture we live in. For instance, when we considerour Chinese five-thousand-years long history, we can see the development of theConfucianism, a Chineseethicaland philosophicalsystem. With the certral concept of social harmony, the Confucianismhas tremedously influenced Chinese people for thousands of years. Learning thismakes us understand why we now pursue the harmounious relationships betweenindividuals and the society. The study of this type of history has a valuebeyond the daily lives of people. It has lead to the obtain of cultureidentity.
Insum, the study of history has values far beyond the daily lives of humanbeings. While it truly provides inspiration and guidance to individuals, it isto some extent
meke the society progressby not duplicating mistakes, and helps us in maintain some uniqueness of aculture. |
