题目:ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that by being specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student education will be truly effective. However, when considering the connection between individual development and the resulting social contribution, I become a little suspect of the absoluteness of the speaker's point. My points of contention with the speaker include the fundamental objectives and nature of education, as discussed below.

I concede that the speaker is on the correct side of the issue. After all, as we all believe, every child is born with a unique potential, but this potential remains unfulfilled until it is analyzed and transformed by education in accordance with the accumulated values of civilization. The ideal objective of education, though hard to reach, is to fully develop the ability by making a specific plan of instruction for every student. On the other hand, students would be instructed effectively when they are interested in what they are learning. For example, if one student is fascinated by physics and often passionate in observing, probably he will be more focused in a physics class than those who do not take physics seriously. As a consequence, that particular student is likely to acquire knowledge more effectively.

However, the speaker's assertion is troubling in two other aspects as well. First, when in childhood, students probably are not clear about what they want, and their interests, as well as needs, are vague and easily affected. For example, if one adult watch a series of TV shows on the variety of animals and the habitats, it is entirely possible that he become interested in animals as long as these TV shows are fascinating enough, let along one child with scant mental stability. Secondly, education is not just an individual need, but also a social demand. In this case, education designer would probably consider what kind of person this society need which is prior to what kind of person one student wants to be. As a result, some fundamental knowledge in different fields is infused into students' head. Furthermore, even if one student is not interested in some subjects that their school forces them to learn, they would probably give up resistance under the guidance of his teacher and get involved in the discussion in class.

Moreover, without moral development, intellectual development cannot make the objective of education as a whole. After all, the role of metal instructor is necessary for every school teacher. Even they try to avoid inbreathing ideology into students' mind, the causal affection is unavoidable. Actually, I quite agree that teachers should tell students some basic moral standards and lead them to the mainstream of the society. Moral development cannot suit every student’s interests and, more specifically, should provide the framework for them leading to a consciousness of social responsibility.

In sum, education will be effective if it is designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student, but we cannot make sure that students’ interests are mature and unchanged. Besides that education is also a social demand so that enforcement is also a nature of it. Infusing necessary knowledge and moral standards are part of the objectives of education. When we are educated, we are also guided, to a generally well-accepted direction. The variety of our personality is not killed, but right on the contrary, is developed more fruitfully on this strong intellectual and moral base.
