Does tradition and modernization are incompatible, and one must choose between them? It is true that many cases of conflict between traditional concepts and modern ideas are occruing quite often around our lives. However, it does not mean a single answer---choose one and quit the other one, but a harmonized way people are seeking for, or already have found. My opinion will be substantiated by several points as below.
First and foremost, please allow me to clarify and specify the key terms "tradition" and "modernization". In my point of view, both of them are relative concepts when put together, between which the biggest distinct is the time when they rose up. Though it is the objective and fair explanation of these two concepts, I have felt a smell of prejudice from the speaker, who is assuming that tradition and modernization have nothing in common, and cannot solve a certain problem----whether it is social, or individual---by exerting each power of them. However, a broader vision is needed for this issue since there are several remarkable examples could be discussed.
A compelling example for the compatiblity of tradition and modernization is Japan, where women's social status is still much lower than men, and the way people talk, think, work is highly "traditional", in contrast with the greatly modernized society. To be surprised, Japan's development just benefited from tradition, including the nation's strong ability in cooperation, and quality of endurance in front of a tough task. Compared with America, Japan may be less "modernized" in sexual equality, and individuality which are always issue of a modern country. Yet, Japan is well-operated by mutual function of a stable social part of women who are looking for house-management, and men who are full of desire in enterprise. Such compatibility of modernization and tradition tells us that they can be both the strong impetus and momentum to its society, when absorbed and arranged well.
Nevertheless, a society which is experiencing a dramatic economic development and boosting properties, could inevitably face a alternation between tradition and modernization. A typical example is China, where traditional idea such as confucious thought is challenged in some modernized area. Yet, after a tired competition and fights for profits----- which is the traditional thought admired by western people--- peopel would still return to their hometown, and their big family, where an old-fashioned, but original way of communication comforts their heart. Now Chinese government are making effort to restor the value system which contains lots of traditional essence from ancient philosophy, and applying it to sooths the social conflicts.
In conclusion, I agree with the speaker's description in one facet of happening of society and behaviours between individuals. Yet, people are doing their best efforts to sooth the conflict, and harmonize the relationship by absorbing advatages from each of them. Thus, I don't agree with the assertiveness of the speaker's statement, and prefer a more realistic, and profound vision for the issue. |
