As you know, the results of the match for the MACRM Mentorship went out last week. I have heard from a few of you that you would prefer a different match, and have asked me to make revisions. I cannot accommodate any such requests. This email is to explain why.
The first consideration is that the match has to balance a variety of factors, including student preferences over faculty and research area, faculty availability and preferences, and the obligation to ensure that every student is matched. These factors interact in nontrival ways, so changing one match often creates problems elsewhere in the matching. I made the assignments to balance all of these factors, and have reached what I think is the best solution. It is imperfect, to be sure. But any solution will be imperfect -- that is the nature of constrained optimization.
The second consideration is basic fairness. The match was made on the basis of a procedure that treated everyone equally. Responding one-by-one to complaints, on the other hand, does not treat everyone equally. It overweighs louder voices at the expense of quieter ones. There is significant evidence that faculty responsiveness to ad hoc complaints is one factor in making university life harder to manage for students from some backgrounds. As a result, I have moved -- in many parts of teaching, not just the MACRM -- to favoring making fewer exceptions to rules and rulings.
This is not to say that the matches are set in stone forever. If your match goes poorly -- if you cannot get the attention of your mentor, if your mentor engages in any inappropriate behavior, or there are other serious problems, let me know right away. In those cases, we will act to get you out of the bad situation.
But for the two reasons given before, I will not be making any changes to the MACRM match at this time.
