I agree with the speaker’s broad assertion that it is necessary for political leaders to withhold information from the public. However, in most of the democratic countries, citizens have the right to know any information about the nation. In my view, we should strike a balance in withhold information from the public and totally open all information to the public, as discussed below.

Firstly, some kinds of information must withhold from the public in order to maintain the stability and safety of the whole society. It is clearly accurate that the political leaders should be honesty with the precondition of the ensuring to the interest of the state and citizens. After all, political leaders are not and should not be moral leaders. When it comes to a contradiction between the safety of the state and the moral standard, it is necessary and responsible for the political leaders to take the stability of the society as the priority.

Furthermore, fully disclosing to the public certain types of information would threaten public safety and perhaps even national security. For example, concerning of the interest of the state, Churchill concealed the truth that they had got the military information of the bombing in order to induce the enemy. With such strategy, they successfully struke back. Otherwise, it might incite the public panic and be little chances to fight back as a whole unity. Immediate disclosure would contribute to no good effect and might even lead to mass hysteria(unnecessary chaos). Such is the wisdom of politicians and the importance of withhold some certain kind of information which is on crucial points to the safety of the station.

However, most of the time, it requires political leaders open information to the public and it is helpful to the government as well as the public. After all, they are elected by the people with trust and confidence to improve the welfare of them. Thus, people have the right to know the truth. Legitimate political leadership requires forthrightness with the citizenry as to the leader's motives and agenda.

On the other hand, if political leaders withhold information from the public it would harm the proper right of its citizenry or result in the damage of the basic groundwork of the government and bring detriment to society. As to the political leaders, if the concealing information concerns about the interest of their own stakes, or even damage the interest of the nation. They would lose the confidence of citizenry and even lead the state into crash.

In sum, in some cases it is necessary to hold the certain kinds of information concerning the state secrets in order to maintain the state safety and social stability. Simultaneously the political leaders should be forthright right with the citizens to avoid power abusing and bad effects to the state. In the final analysis, we are forced to strike a balance in withhold information from the public and completely open to them. Overstating either one may fall the nation into an endangered position.
